The Most Dangerous Game Essay
The Most Dangerous Game is a book by Richard Connell. It was created into a movie in 1932. In this essay we will compare and contrast the many similarities and differences between these two works of art. After we will decide which of these was done better. The Integrity of the story is affected by the many differences and similarities in the areas of the initiating event, characterization, and plot between the story and movie, The Most Dangerous Game.
The first things we will be comparing are the initiating events. In the book Rainsford was standing on a rail the he fell into the ocean and swam to the island. In the movie his yacht his the rocks that General Zaroff set up. Even though this doesn’t change the storyline it is a big difference. Also in the movie, the people who didn't get trapped inside the boat, got ate by sharks, besides Rainsford. In the movie, when Rainsford reaches the island, he meets General Zaroff, Ivan, and other workers. In the book, it is only Zaroff and Ivan.

In the book, Zaroff has white hair, but he has jet black in the movie. But, he has the scar on his face in the movie as well as the book. Ivan in the book has a beard down to his chest, and is very tall. In the movie, he seems to bit more average height with a shorter beard, but he is Deaf and unable to speak in both. Rainsford is the same in both. In both book and film, he says there are two kinds of people in this world, The hunter and the hunted. The movie has a lady and her brother at his castle, in the book, it is only Rainsford, Ivan, and
The short-story never explained how Rainsford escaped the island, but in the movie, Rainsford stole Zaroff’s boat and escaped with the fair lady named Eve. The author wanted to give the film a more exotic ending rather than not knowing the outcome. Another difference in the plot is that Rainsford swam back to the place where he originally was, in order to murder Zaroff. But in the movie Eve and Rainsford decided to murder Zaroff and escape together. Overall, the plot remained the same from the short-story.
The author of “The Most Dangerous Game” is Richard Connell. Richard Connell is an American author and journalist, who wrote a lot of short stories and few novels. His short stories appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's Weekly. While he was still in high school, Richard Connell was hired as the city editor for sixteen dollars a week. He studied college at Georgetown University, while working as a secretary for his father, who had been elected to Congress. After his father’s death, he moved to Harvard, and started writing for two college newspapers. After graduating, he transferred to New York, but he also left a brief stint in the army during World War |. After that, he moved to Los Angeles and began to write screenplays for major Hollywood movie studios. Richard Connell’s most famous story is “The Most Dangerous Game”, which is still widely read, even nowadays. It has inspired many movies and it’s probably the most frequently anthologized American story.
Overall, the movie and book have many differences and similarities, some more important than others. The story still is clear without many scenes from the book, but the movie would have more thought in it.

Each version also has the main characters boarding up the windows. Anyone who thought the birds won’t attack are usually found dead, but in the movie they are found with their eyes pecked out. Also, both the story and the movie have REALLY bad endings! They aren’t very similar, but they both leave you hanging. When you see a movie or read a book you want to know what happens to the main characters. In these two, you didn’t get an ending. They left you hanging and for some people that ruins it all.
When Rainsford falls off of the boat, he has to try his best to stay afloat until he can find something to latch on to. He swims vigorously until he reaches Ship-Trap Island. "Jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness... dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs." It is midday and he is just searching for a place to rest when he runs into Ivan, the astonishingly large guard of the island. Zaroff, the owner of the island, joins in on their conversation about hunting. The conversation is interesting to say the least. Zaroff says, "You'll find this game worth playing…your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" Zaroff is trying to point out that he finds interest in hunting humans, and he wants to know if Rainsford will rise to the challenge. Rainsford is left with a choice to make; will he fight Zaroff, or will he decline and get killed by Ivan. The choice in this situation is pretty self- evident.
In my Opinion I found The Most Dangerous Game better, of course they were both great stories but The Most Dangerous Game was more action filled. I liked how Sanger Rainsford used his skills to in the end beat General Zaroff.
The movie and the story had some of the same characters but some weren't exactly the same. The movie introduced many different characters and changed some of the others. For example, the movie had the plant lady and had the mentor of Anderton as the founders of Precrime while in the book, Anderton was the only founder of Precrime. Also, Witwer wasn't blond he had black hair and Kapler wasn't named Kapler he was named Crow. In the story they had the red head Fleming who did not exist
Also in the book there was a lot of talking and boring parts but in the movie they went strait into the action. In the movie you could see more detail, for example when Davie was in the woods with the creepy poor people you could see that the girl was hiding a big weapon in her robe so she could steal his money. This makes the movie more interesting and makes me want to find out what she is going to do with the weapon.
“Object of the game:to win” (Raskin pg. 38). The Westing Game is about Sam Westings death. Mr. Westing wrote a will and also picked heirs to be in his game. Whoever wins gets a prize from him. To win you have to find all of the clues and put together to make a puzzle. The Westing Game book and movie contain many similarities and differences that are worth exploring.
Usually movies try to take the story to a different level or by adding parts or just try to change it to a completely different story. Some of the differences between the movie as to the book are some little and large differences. They might also try taking little parts away that will change how the readers see the story characters. An example of that would be Walter not smoking in the movie (Pg 115). Walter usually smokes because he is stressed or just as a way to relax. Walter also does not get punched by Mam...
“The Most Dangerous Game” is about a man named Rainsford. When Rainsford falls off a yacht and has to swim to the nearest island, he meets a general named, General Zaroff, who became disinterested with hunting animals, so he switched to hunting humans as a game. He tricks ships into thinking that there is a channel they can sail through, but then
In both the novel and movie focus on the war. The war influences the characters to enroll. Also, the main setting is at the Devon School. However, in the novel Gene visits Leper at his house but in the movie Leper lives in the woods. In the novel Gene is coming back to the Devon School 15 years later. However, in the book he is coming to Devon as a new student. Therefore, similarities and differences exist in time and setting in the novel and the movie. In the novel and the movie there are similarities and differences in events, character, and time and setting.
“My life was taken from me-by one of you !” ( Raskin, pg. 34). In the book The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin a series of roller coasters comes up in this murder mystery. This story has an up and down of emotional events. The Westing Game book and movie contains many similarities and differences that are worth exploring.
To begin with, the setting for “The Most Dangerous Game” is very fitting. The author, Richard Connell, picked the best place to set the story. Reason being, the mansion is on a large island that is feared by everyone. Also the mansion, on the outside at least, looks scary. Since it was dark out and there were cliffs surrounding the house, there was a scary shadow that was cast down. While on the yacht, Sanger Rainsford, the main character or protagonist, came across this island and asked for the name. His friend Whitney replied, “The old charts call it ‘Ship Trap Island’,” (Connell). Ship Trap Island is the name of the island. It doesn’t sound like a happy place to be but it is the dark and violent thoughts and feelings that come with the title, which perfectly fits the theme of the story. Another form of proof, to tell where the story took place is in this quote, “…the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea dosed over his head” (Connell). Rainsford went to get a closer look to see the island more clearly by stepping on the rail. He lost his balance and fell...
