Social Workers and Children Social workers are professionals that can help people resolve difficult issues, and improve their well-being and their quality of life. These professionals typically work with individuals and groups of individuals that are experiencing crises in their lives.”( Start a Social Work Career) Social workers are dedicated to meeting the needs of their clients by interviewing them and laying out a detailed plan of goals for them to accomplish. They then help them attain these goals by using the available programs and services that a regular person would never have heard of or known they had access to. 1) To achieve this the National Association of Social Workers has created the NASW Code of Ethics which are a guideline for social workers to follow to help meet the needs of people. This code of ethics has six core values which are services, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, importance of the human relationship, integrity, and competence. (Kirst-Ashman, 2013) A social worker will use these core values and they 're ethical responsibilities to influence the way their client receives assistance. Social workers will inform their clients of the available resources and help them evaluate each option carefully and thoroughly. A group of individuals that social workers tend to spend a lot of time working with are children. “Children are among the highest users of state services in the United States.” (Palattiyil, Sidhva, and Chakrabarti, 2015, p. 3) Children oftentimes fall victim to the inequalities of a low-income home, they are more than often victims of domestic violence and lower level education. A social worker 's job is advocating for the child and to make sure they are creating a safe place and trusting place for the child. This section will focus on the cares and needs of children in the United States who have been neglected and are placed in the foster care system. “There are half a million children in our nation who live away from their families and communities because of abuse or neglect at home.” (Weinberg and Shea, 2010, p. 245) This means that these children are in the foster care system and are often passed around multiple times to different foster homes. A social worker is called in when a child has been abused or neglected by their parental guardian and they then become responsible for the welfare of that child. It is their job to find that child a suitable foster care home for temporary placement. Often times the placement into foster care are temporary, but becomes permanent because children are not being returned to their parental guardian or being adopted. With so many children in foster care it is hard to find a qualified foster home to place these children in safely. Children in foster care often times develop trauma when they are being pulled away from their families and being moved around with no stability. Some children are living in extremely unsafe and poor conditions in their foster care homes. Being put into foster care can cause severe damage to the child’s ability to grow mentally.
