Define 10 term from the textbook.

1. Common Knowledge

Beliefs that are tested and believed by the majority of society to be accounted as knowledge. In many

cases, this knowledge is referred to as background knowledge.

2. Universalism

Concepts, morals or beliefs that is justified to every individual in society no matter their race, gender,

etc…

3. Sociology of Knowledge

An individual’s status within society that affects their life and what is right and what is wrong is based of

societal status. Decisions are made to best benefit self rather than the lives of others.

4. Relativism

There is no absolute truths as all beliefs are equally valid. Everyone with their different opinion can also

be right.

All knowledge arrives our experience and experience are influenced by our

surrounding. Although our micro and macro influence may be controlled, our exo sphere is easily

influenced as it is controlled by society.

 What is and is NOT worth describing as KNOWLEDGE?

Although knowledge is not a living breathing person, it is a subjective version of a living human. Just as

there is a diversity of human across the globe, there is a diversity within knowledge itself, therefore

knowledge cannot be categorized into right and wrong knowledge externally. Within society, to certain

limits, it is not to okay have a definite similar knowledge by all, yet internally a human being should be

aware of his/her bias knowledge as that is what help an individual to make decisions in the future. Again

limit (such as killing, rape, etc...) have to be set by society together to create a safe diverse environment

that benefits the future of our society.

 What is the “sociology of knowledge” and what is it area of concern? Why would it be potential

relevance to our course and to knowers in the 21st century?

Diversity makes you more confident with your beliefs, to better understand your

choices and actions.

 Define knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description. Does one seem more

prevalent than another in your mind? What have famous thinkers/philosophers had to say

about this in the past? Today?

Knowledge by acquaintance is knowledge gained through action (experiences), whereas knowledge by

description is knowledge gained by written or spoken words (facts/statement). I personally believe

knowledge by acquaintance is more prevalent because experience teach you your strengths and

weaknesses. Everything has pros and cons, therefore both knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge

by description are important to better understand our surroundings. For example, to understand micro

matter such as DNA, we need to us knowledge by description, as we are limited to gain that knowledge

through experience. On the other hand, when we conduct a science experiment we better understand

the concept rather than just reading it. As mentioned above, I do prefer knowledge by acquaintance, but

without knowledge by description I would have very limited knowledge. Both types of knowledge
