In the story Nicholas Kristof documents a girl named zzzzz and her life after being raped and tries to help her but sadly nothing really can happen to fix it and justice is not served. Rape affects us all not just on a personal level but also on a social and even structural level.

According to the article “Statistics on Women Offenders,” Leonard A Sipes Jr. stated that “6 out of 10 women in prison have experienced physical or sexual abuse in the past. Approximately 69 percent of these assaults occurred before the age of 18” (corrections). Statistics from 2013 show that over 37% of female offenders are raped before going to prison. Victims of rape should not blame themselves or see the situation as a joke, which is proven in Patricia Lockwood’s poem, “Rape Joke”. She uses a very unique style of a story-like poem to tell a story of an instance that could happen and how to see the situation afterwards. Fortunately, I was born to two parents who decided to break the Hispanic practice of spanking children when they do something wrong. My parents wanted to be different than their own parents who beat them with anything they could find. I cringed as I read Storm’s past because I never had to endure this with my own parents who found alternatives to disciplining me. I question whether Storm’s parents were victims of abuse when they were younger and if Storm was simply another victim of a lifelong cycle of abuse. Although she is an adult now, her mind remains a child due to the fact that she was robbed of her adolescence. I feel this way because the greatest thing in life is being able to learn how to love and care for someone without ever having to feel that they may hurt us later on. When Storm began stating in detail her experiences, I was shocked to read at how her parents portrayed the image of being strict parents in public, but behind closed doors they were monsters to their precious child. Furthermore, the images of Storm sitting in her pile of feces makes me think of my five year old niece. I believe this article has hit me so hard due to the fact that I am very protective of my niece and her well-being. I cannot imagine myself looking into her deep hazel eyes as I tie her to a bed or lock her into a closet for days the same way Storm’s mother did. I wonder if Storms parents ever felt remorse as they looked into their child’s eyes each time they abused her. Initially, I was unaware of what historical trauma is and how it worked to create lastly trauma within individuals. I assumed historical trauma would relate to the history behind someone’s trauma. “What is Historical Trauma?” opened my eyes to issues that not only individuals, but collective peoples face every day and in many different communities. Bravada Garrett-Akinsanya spoke within the video about historical trauma and spoke on a personal story of trauma for her. Within Garrett-Akinsanya’s story, she was a young girl who thought that the “colored water fountain” would provide her with Kool-Aid, not just water. She spoke of this moment as a piece of trauma that she remembered to this day. When Garrett-Akinsanya told this story, goosebumps appeared on my arms and I could not help but feel horrible for her trauma that stemmed from historical trauma. I always try to keep an open mind and never place blame on any survivors, male or female. My experiences with friends growing up in abusive homes has allowed me time to process what steps I took to help them as well as what steps a younger me may have done better to assist them in their time of need. I will carry this with me in my practice and have an open mind about what enters the room as well as learn from their personal experiences, as each individual will have specific stories. As I am an unjudging individual, I feel a strength of mine is that I am a great active listener. The novel continually displayed many individuals in Samantha’s life that either did not listen, did not listen well enough, or brushed her pain off as a typical response. I strive to not be one of those individuals and to always pull out strengths of their situation and seek supervision whenever I need further training or support.
