The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a tragic play set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 during the time of the witch trials. The play begins with Reverend Parris discovers a group of girls dancing in the forest. When they are being questioned about the what happened, one of the girls, Abigail Williams, a servant and former lover of a married man, scapegoats Tituba, a slave resident for the things they did in the forest. Then the girls start to give out the names of other to the judges, Danforth and Hathorne. At first, they only name the people in the lower class. But soon it gets to the middle class, such as the Proctor family. Elizabeth Proctor gets named by Abigail, because Abigail wants to marry John Proctor. After Tituba scapegoats, Abigail and the other girls start yelling out names of the poor people in Salem. They then tell lies about seeing the Devil in the forest, “I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!”(48) Abigail says that she wants to be with God again, but she has an affair with John Proctor which is against the Commandments. He knows Abigail and the other girls are lying about seeing the Devil and he wants to stop the court from hanging more innocent people. But Abigail and the girls pressured Mary Warren to be on their side. She has no choice but to name John Proctor that he is working with the Devil. John Proctor is angered by this and says: “I say God is Dead! A fire, a fire is burning… God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together!”(119-120) John Proctor says God is dead because he thinks God is just watching all the innocent people get hanged. While the Abigail and the girls are lying, but considered as innocent of witchcrafts. One day we will all die because of their lies. When John Proctor get thrown in prison for trying to overthrow the court, Abigail has vanished from Salem by boat. Mr. Hale asks Elizabeth Proctor to convince her husband to make a false confession or else he will be hanged. After John Proctor confessed, he does not want to give the false confession paper.
