What is hypnosis? Many doctors have tried to come up with a definition but they have yet to suffice everyone. There is multiple definitions and none seem to be enough. The most universal definition of hypnosis is “ the induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction.” Some may believe that hypnosis is fake and is just what you would see on tv. People being hypnotized to do mediocre stuff like acting like an animal or make funny noises. This is totally wrong and has damaged the public image of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is an advocate to help people break addictions by helping you regain control of your thoughts and actions ensuring you make the right choices, it also helps alleviate the physical symptoms of addiction. Personally, my friend Jack used to smoke over a pack of cigarettes a day. He wanted to quit but never could because will power is only temporary. One day he was researching ways to quit smoking and hypnosis came up. He eventually went to see the hypnotherapist and completely quit smoking cold turkey the same day. Also, it helps with weight loss and is thirty percent more effective than just dieting. Another advantage of hypnotherapy is helping cope with stress. It is almost unbelievable some of the pain people can withstand under hypnosis. All they do is get hypnotised and are completely awake and aware of everything that is going on. For instance, Alex Lenkei who is a professional hypnotherapist and psychotherapist had a surgery where the surgeon removed some bone at the base of his thumb and fused some joints together without any anesthetic! Alex was completely aware of what was going on during surgery and he felt no pain what so ever. It only took him roughly thirty seconds to induce himself into deep hypnosis. Hypnosis can be used for post operations as well to help the patient relax and have a more successful surgery. Hypnosis is also used during labor to aid mothers for a more natural birth.
