Often times, people use what they have to their advantage to get what they want. One of the main characters, Jay Gatsby, in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald helps readers understand a bit more as to how his mansion was a symbol of his love for Daisy. Five years ago, Gatsby met Daisy Buchanan at her mansion in East Egg for a party and fell in love with her. With World War One beginning, Gatsby left for the war with the thought of coming back to Daisy waiting for him, however, he came back to her married to the former Yale football star, Tom Buchanan. In spite of this disappointment, Mr. Gatsby threw weekly parties at his enormous mansion in hopes of luring Daisy into one of them; sadly that didn’t work. As Jordan is informing Nick about the plan to bring Gatsby and Daisy together with a tea party, she blurts out, “I think he half expected her to wander into one of his parties, some night” (Fitzgerald 84). Gatsby thought that he could convince Daisy to come to one of his parties since he lived so close and they seemed to be so vivacious. Gatsby had bought the immense mansion in the hopes of it catching Daisy’s attention. Mr. Gatsby believed in “repeating the past”, which is why he threw the parties at his mansion. He wanted the mansion to reignite the love that he and Daisy once had. Throughout the five years that Gatsby had been trying to get Daisy’s attention, he finally started to understand that the parties just weren’t doing the job. In Central Park, Jordan is telling Nick the background of Gatsby and Daisy’s love story. As she is getting close to the end of her story, she tells Nick, “Gatsby bought the house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald 83). Gatsby wanted to make sure that he wouldn’t lose Daisy again even though she is with another man. He wanted to feel her presence as he looked at the green light flashing across the bay. With Gatsby able to see Daisy’s house, he felt a sense of hope to getting her back. Coupled with his humongous and lively parties, Gatsby hoped that Daisy would see the action at his mansion and be tempted to check it out. In reality, Daisy never appeared at the Gatsby mansion which left Gatsby desperate for a better idea. Without Gatsby living so close to Daisy, Nick wouldn’t have been able to invite her to the tea party that eventually lead to Gatsby bringing her to his neighboring
