In my view, play occurs more often in children than adults. Play is a source of happiness; an expression of freedom. Play promotes connection and creativity. Hallowell (2011) suggests that play leads to all great discoveries. Play is the activity in the mind that allows you to dream up novel approaches, fresh plans (p.113). Play for me is a temporary form of escape from my everyday hustle and bustle. I really like how Hallowell (2011) described play. First he stated “play is what humans can do and computers can’t” (p113). He went on to describe the opposite of play which is doing exactly what one is told to do. He said, “It leads to robotic behavior…” (p.114). Many of our actions are “free” in the sense that we do not feel that other people are making us do them. When we play, there are no limits. I found regular physical activity increases my confidence and self-esteem and reduces my stress and anxiety. I enjoy being active because it is fun. I enjoy making friends and connecting with people at the gym. Physically, I just feel better, have more energy and hopefully even adding years to my life, by just exercising. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity (my form of play) are hard to ignore. I believe everyone benefits from exercise, regardless of age, sex, or physical ability.
Stuart Brown speaks at TED the importance of play. Dr. Brown reveals his definition of play as an apparently purposeless activity that is fun to do and pleasurable. We all grow up with play experiences, however as adults we do not play very much. He emphasizes the fact that adults do not include play like they should.
