A plethora of companies began introducing water guns to the toy market before the 1980s. No name companies began creating water pistols in the shapes of sea-creatures and cartoon characters, while others introduced more intricate designs from movies like Star Trek and Rambo. One company, Entertech, even went so far as to produce battery-powered water weapons but the designs proved to be a little too life-like. The water guns began resembling real live machine guns like those used by G.I.'s and some even came equipped with a back pack and grenade devices. The water weaponry market continued evolving, and soon enough, perhaps the most important contributor, Lonnie Johnson, came into the picture. A nuclear engineer, who, in 1982, thought …show more content…

He came up with the model for this "power drencher" which has various nozzles at different angles and a pressurized water system (this model was called the Super Soaker MDS - multidirectional soaker). Johnson connected this device to his bathroom sink at home and after the stream of water shot across the bathroom, he realized it would become a success. After approaching Larami Ltd.. with this creation, the deal was sealed. "Released in 1990 and still being produced today, the Super Soakers revolutionized water guns forever by using compressed air to shoot out powerful blasts of water"(RoG). These new models could hold more water and shoot farther than any other on the market. "In 1992, Larami sold many types of water guns based on the pressurized reservoir and separate pressurized firing chamber models" (Bergen). The shooter holds the gun, pumping the handle to create pressure and pulls the trigger to release a powerful stream of water that can squirt up to 30 feet and drench opponents. Super-Soakers have evolved over the years and some "look like they're more suited for battling invaders from Mars than getting your pals soaking wet." (RoG) The only downside of these toys is that fact that they've been remodeled plenty of times, to the point where the gun becomes to heavy for a child to carry and use, once filled with water. Regardless of how they've evolved in this past decade, though, these "insano-powerful water blasters" are still popular today and rule the squirt gun market (RoG). Lonnie Johnson and Larami Ltd. have over 2,000,000 in Super-Soaker sales.
