The American Dream is the idea that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. Although this may be the definition that the internet has given me, it does not necessarily mean this is the definition that all people think of when they hear the words “American Dream.” To some people it may mean being able to live comfortably, and not having to scrape by everyday on what little money they have. To others it may mean living the high life with gold, diamonds, and a private jet. I have written this essay to tell what the American Dream has meant in the past and means today, what it means to me, and what it means to other people.
The path of the American Dream was forged by Benjamin Franklin when his ‘rags to riches’ story began to give people hope that they, too, could become successful (Grantham). Throughout the process of learning about the American Dream and interviewing my family members, my opinions have changed a lot. To me, the American Dream means freedom plain and simple. It means everybody having the same chances in life no matter their background, who they are today, or whether they are a different race, gender, sexuality, or religion, everybody will be treated with the same standards of living. I personally find it hard for this to be possible for all people simply because of today's society. I do believe that with younger generation sticking up for what they believe in more now, America may be on the right track to achieving this version of the dream.
