The American Dream is the idea that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. Although this may be the definition that the internet has given me, it does not necessarily mean this is the definition that all people think of when they hear the words “American Dream.” To some people it may mean being able to live comfortably, and not having to scrape by everyday on what little money they have. To others it may mean living the high life with gold, diamonds, and a private jet. I have written this essay to tell what the American Dream has meant in the past and means today, what it means to me, and what it means to other people.
The path of the American Dream was forged by Benjamin Franklin when his ‘rags to riches’ story began to give people hope that they, too, could become successful (Grantham). Throughout the process of learning about the American Dream and interviewing my family members, my opinions have changed a lot. To me, the American Dream means freedom plain and simple. It means everybody having the same chances in life no matter their background, who they are today, or whether they are a different race, gender, sexuality, or religion, everybody will be treated with the same standards of living. I personally find it hard for this to be possible for all people simply because of today's society. I do believe that with younger generation sticking up for what they believe in more now, America may be on the right track to achieving this version of the dream. Every American has a different definition of the American Dream, and what has been at the root of the American Dream differs between each individual. That is not to say you can live the life of a criminal and no one would care, but you can choose what and who you want in your life without being supressed. The term “American Dream” is defined as an idea which believes that all people have the possibility of prosperity and success. The idea first came from James Adams, a noted American writer and historian. He claimed, “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement.” Therefore, the core concepts of the American Dream were closely linked to hard work and opportunity.
First, what is the American dream? According to David Wallechinsky, “the traditional American Dream is based on the belief that hardworking citizens can improve their lives, pay their monthly bills without worry, give their children a start to an even better life, and still save enough to live comfortably after they retire” (1). “The American Dream” states, “It has always represented the possibility for individuals to succeed and live a life of wealth and comfort, made possible by both the political and economic attitudes in the USA and the individual’s own hard work” (1). Daniella Nicole adds that “in years past, chasing the American Dream meant the sky was the limit. . .” (1).
Years ago, the United States of America was the prime example of prosperity and opportunity. In recent years, in the worst recession since the Great Depression, unemployment and interest rates have skyrocketed. The “American Dream” is an idea that was once a commonly accepted ideology in this country. It has since become only a fallacy. The “American Dream” is no longer an attainable idea, only a fantasy. The “American Dream” is not a true dream that will ever be equally attainable by everyone.
The American Dream is known to be a hope for a better, richer, happier life for all citizens of every class. For almost all Americans, this entails earning a college degree, gaining a good job, buying a house, and starting a family. Although this seems wonderful, a large amount of the American population believes that the Dream has changed immensely because of increased prices in today’s society, the price of tuition being highly unaffordable, as well as the unemployment rate skyrocketing and weaker job growth. While some American citizens believe it has changed, others believe that the American Dream has not changed, but point out it is harder to obtain.

Proponents of the American dream believe that there is equal opportunity for all in the American society to achieve success. Success is not pegged on social status, race, or creed, but rather on an individual’s own efforts. The definition of the American dream has unique interpretations to different people. The most common meaning is that of a life of abundance and prosperity, characterized by economic rewards that enable one to live a middle class life of comfort. Here, success is measured by material possessions such as beautiful homes, cars, a high income, and the ability to spend on luxury items. America is considered a land of plenty, and as such, many who come to the United States in search of the American dream have this form of success in mind.
The American Dream is exactly what it seems to be: the chance for people to have hope of achieving something great. However, it demands pleasure of every victory one has earned, and the desire is always demanding one to work slightly harder and gain slightly more than someone else.
