The urban legend of the West Virginia Mothman persists to this day. Some say the Mothman appears in times of impending dangers. Others say the legend causes disasters. So, what is the legend of the West Virginia Mothman? The first sighting is said to have occurred November 12, 1966. There were five men, which were digging a grave; in a graveyard. The men reportedly saw the bird-like humanoid. Most reports describe the Mothman as a seven-foot tall humanoid-bird. The Mothman was said to have glowing red eyes, and some reports said the creature made a screaming noise. Most tell that the home of the creature is the old TNT plant from WWII near Mount Pleasant, West Virginia. Around a week after the first sighting, two young couples were out by the old TNT plant in Mount Pleasant when they reported that the creature appeared. The couples were chased by the Mothman and apparently kept up with them while they were driving "100 miles per hour". This was the day of the Silver Bridge collapse. Forty-six people died in the incident, and it was later confirmed that the collapse was the result of a crack in the bridge. There were two main theories on how the Mothman was related to the tragedy. One of the theories is that the Mothman was trying to warn the people of Mount Pleasant of impending disaster; trying to communicate. The Black Hawks were down low over the city, and the Little Birds were closing in on the target. Tires burning on the street near the target set alarm. It was a way Somalis signaled trouble and summoned militia.

Graphic novels are something that requires a lot of deliberate thought and dedication to create a novel that affects the reader in the way authors want them to. Everything within a graphic novel is conscious decision to enable the tones, story, characters, and messages to get through as best as they can. Due to this it is difficult to create an adaption based on someone else’s work, as you want to portray their messages and tones accurately, but also how the creator interoperates the original authors work. This is a problem I had in the creation of my mini graphic adaption of The Flying Troutmans by Miriam Toews. There had been a terrible drought that year leaving the wood on the city’s buildings, streets and sidewalks dry and brittle. Building codes were pretty much ignored adding to the risk that these structures were not safe and sound. Chicago was a perfect spot for a major fire to break out. There are many theories on how the fire actually started. The most common theory is that a family’s cow knocked over a lighted lantern inside the barn. From there the fire grew and spread quickly, destroying many homes and commercial office buildings and even ships in the harbor. On October 10, when the fire was finally brought under control, there was an estimated 300 people dead and 100,000 people left homeless (4). Over 17,000 buildings were destroyed. (4) The estimated damage caused by the fire was in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
This story was first told to me and my older brother by my uncle when we were still relatively young children (about 4 and 8 years old). We were riding in the car and he was telling the story to entertain and scare us. At the time he was in his mid-30s and living in Olney, MD, as were we. He called the story “The Green Rat,” and after I talked to him about the story, he said that it was a scary tale that he first heard on a camping trip with the Boy Scouts in California when he was in 7th grade (approximately 1966 when he was about 12 years old).

May 31, 1889 was a day that brought terror to the small town of Johnstown Pennsylvania. The small town was established in 1794 as a steel town and had a population on 30,000. The cause of the flood actually starts not at the town but 14 upstream at the South Fork Dam were the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creeks rivers meet as you can see in the image below. At this place is Lake Conemaugh, a 3-mile long lake located up against the side of a mountain, 450 feet higher than Johnstown PA. Paranormal Activity is similar to pseudoscience and involves experiences outside of science (Hines, 2003). However, there is another side to these strange occurrences which includes UFOs, alien contact, and the appearance of unusual creatures. According to Imbrogno (2008) “No matter how skeptical you are, there are three things that cannot be denied: that reports of paranormal experiences exist, that they persist, and they are increasingly occurring on a global scale” (pg.16). According to Hines (2003) “Paranormal phenomena includes extrasensory perception (ESP), telekinesis, ghosts, poltergeists, life after death, reincarnation, faith healing, human auras, and so forth” (pg.20). The term UFOs, unidentified flying objects, is the reported sighting of any object or arrangement of lights that do not have a logical or natural explanation. The first reported incident in America occurred in 1947, when an amateur pilot, Kenneth Arnold, made claims of a sighting while flying his small plane near Mount Rainier in Washington which caused the U.S. government to begin searching for extraterrestrials (Stephey, 2009). Moreover, Chinese texts from the 4th century make claims of a “moon boat” that visited once every 12 years hovering above the country to become the earliest sighting in recorded history (Stephey, 2009). Although issues such as speed, shape, and size continues to differs, the U.S. Air Force commissioned Project Blue Book, an official record of sights that occurred in the U.S. from 1952 to 1969 logging over 12,000 sightings or events involving UFOs.
The Butterfly Effect is something very real, and this story has very good examples of this. One example used is ‘the mouse theory.’ The mouse theory states that the death of one mouse could cause a chain reaction of events that leads to the eventual downfall of humanity. The Nelly Butler hauntings is referred to as the first recorded ghost story in American history (LiBrizzi 5), and possibly the most exciting hauntings to date as there are still many unsolved mysteries. The apparition appeared on more than 30 separate occasions to over 100 witnesses in Sullivan, Maine, just over fifteen years after the American Revolution (5-6). Although the Nelly Butler apparition is one of the most convincing ghosts of all time, it was subject to suspicions of fraud. These claims turn out to be groundless as the evidence reveals the ghost to be genuine.
It created a gouge several hundred feet long and was scattered over a large area. Some of the debris had strange physical properties. He took some debris to show his neighbors then his son. Soon after that he notified the sheriff. The sheriff then contacted the authorities at Roswell Army Air Field Base. The are was closed off and the debris was eventually flown by B-29 and C-54 aircraft to Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio.
When the industrial revolution began in the 18th century tons and tons of soot was deposited around industrial areas. The soot would then turn the rocks and trees and other objects that were lighter colors to a dark color. Be for the revolution the mouth was a much lighter color and blended in with every thin that was light. When the soot began to fall it made the moths easy to see.
