Wealth Definition Essay

Merriam-Webster defines wealth as "abundance of valuable material possessions or resources." Although that may be the dictionary definition, it is by no means the only definition. The word wealth has numerous connotations.

First, let's discuss the dictionary definition. Valuable materials in today's society are all obtained by one thing. Money. Without money, there are very few things you are able to provide yourself. For example, in order to go literally everywhere, you need to be wearing clothing. To acquire clothes, you need money. Even if you decided to make yourself an outfit, you would still need money to buy fabric, thread and sewing needles. Thus, our world as a whole is obsessed with making money. Those who are considered wealthy by today's standards can be easily recognized based on a few characteristics. First, look at their clothes. The more money a person has the more expensive and luxurious their clothes are. Secondly, their houses can be identified as the incredibly large ones with pillars, privacy fences, and large in-ground pools. If you do not have what they have, in their eyes, you are not wealthy and therefore you do not matter to them

My philosophy is incredibly different. Wealth isn't defined by how much money you make a year or by the clothes you wear, but rather, it's having joy and being loved. To me, wealth goes beyond money. The old adage, "You can't buy happiness" is one hundred percent the truth. The richest man in the world is also the loneliest. Wealth goes beyond what's on the surface and what others can see; wealth is knowing you are loved and being happy. Yes, monetary wealth is real and valid, but it isn't important.
