In the comedic and dramatic movie We Bought a Zoo, directed by the Californian Cameron Crowe, Benjamin Mee is a stalwart believer that he can fix everything. In one of the first scenes of the movie, when Benjamin is in the principal's office with his son to talk about him stealing a cash box, he notices a broken window. He then proceeds to try to fix it while waiting for the principal to come. His son, Dylan, tells him the principal is coming, but he continues to fix it anyway, saying “I can fix it”.(Crowe, x:xx) This is showing how Benjamin believes that he can fix everything. He can’t, unfortunately, fix everything, which is hard for him to accept. So, when his wife dies, he cannot recover and move on, which makes life very hard for him.

This paper reviews and analyzes three main issues with the first one being leadership. There are many places where people can go to see live animals such as aquariums, zoos, and safari parks. A pleasant way to define a Zoo is to call it “an establishment that maintains a collection of wild animals”. (Google def) Another way to say that is a facility in which animals are “enclosed in cages for public exhibition”. I believe zoos are ethical; however, changes need to be made to eliminate problems I have discovered. At the beginning of this course we tried to define the word spectacle, we came up with such ideas as catches attention, large, inauthentic, wide coverage, etc.(first day class) finally noticing that it is difficult to pin point the exact definition to a spectacle. For this research paper I decided to focus my research and analysis on Zoos and how they have become spectacles in today’s society. I will analyze the zoos myself, as well as relate the spectacles of zoos to some theories such as Umberto Eco’s hyper reality, and Jean Baudrillard’s theory of Simulation. I will end by focusing on some specific instances with the idea of animals the spectacles for human enjoyment.

Zoos have always reflected the curiosity and intrigue of humankind toward the animal kingdom. Throughout several different ancient civilizations dating back thousands of years, including Egypt, China, and all over Europe, caged wild animals were seen as divine representatives and sat next to the thrones of only the most wealthy and powerful. “Stone tablets found in the Sumerian city of Ur, dated to around 2300 BC, document the establishment and management of the earliest known animal park” (Hamilton 2007). In ancient Egypt, for example, tamed lions were often kept by the sides of pharaohs thrones (Bostock 7). In sixteenth century Europe as well, animal collecting among the wealthy was a popular sport. “King Manuel the First of Portugal received monkeys and macaw’s from South America, grey parrots and baboons from Africa, and elephants, rhinoceros, and cheetahs from India” (Bostock 24).
The world is constantly trying to invent and find new forms of entertainment. This being said, people often find pleasure in watching animals. When thinking about how animals are used in the entertainment industry, it seems that in most cases they are being mistreated. Owners of such animals that are neglected lack the care and knowledge to provide for them.
