Even though The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was written in two different mediums, there are many similarities and variations between the two. The movie and short story both tell the reader his daydreams he experiences. The movie is more suitable because it's easier to comprehend what's happening. The movie is written in a modern time period rather when the short story was taking place in the 1930s. For this reason , the movie is stronger than the written version. For example, in the movie, it shows how he works at Life and is under pressure of finding negative number twenty-five from his boss. (Stiller). On the other hand, they're alike because Walter is also under constant pressure from his wife to stop daydreaming. His wife is always telling
In the short story, “ The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty” written by James Thurber, it describes a man who while in the midst of everyday life, floats off into daydream that often cause him more trouble than it is worth. His wife, Mrs. Mitty, on the surface does not seem like a well-rounded character. It always seems her life’s mission is to demean Walter and to always use her overbearing nature to nag him. However, there may be more to this character than what meets the eye. I believe that Mrs. Mitty is actually a well-rounded character in the fact that she only acts the way she does only for her husband and his well-being.
The book and movie were quite similar but there were also many differences. Some of the differences are that at the beginning of the book when George finds the mouse there already in the water and where they're going to stay the night so when he throws the mouse it lands in the water and when Lennie goes to get fire wood he goes into the water to get the mouse and then they have a talk about not keeping a dead mouse. Another difference that stood out to me was that when Carlson went to kill Candy’s dog and the day that Candy, George, and Lennie talk about living on their own ranch and being together was only one day not to like it was in the book.

In both the movie and the book, the title character retreats into fantasy as an escape from his mundane reality because in the real world, he is ordinary, insecure, and passive. In the short story, Walter simply retreats into his daydreams and tolerates his domineering wife, while in the movie he actively pursues finding himself.

This was major because Crooks never found out that the plan was true about the little house. In the book after he heard Candy talk about it he wanted to get in on the deal. Also the movie it never showed Lennie have his illusions of his Aunt Carla and the rabbits when he was waiting by the pond.

Directed and acted by Gary Sinise and John Malkovich, Hollywood took a stab at trying to recreate this literary success. The novel, which takes place in the 1930’s, follows the lives of two men, George and Lennie, as they try to attain their dream of owning a farm. George is a smart man who always seems to have things figured out. Lennie is massive, but has the mind of a young child. George looks after him, but it is not easy since Lennie always seems to get himself in some kind of trouble. As they struggle towards their dreams, George and Lennie face obstacles that test their friendship. In the end, with Lennie dead, George finds out that dreams aren’t worth striving for, and eventually, loneliness overcomes everything. The movie, running almost two hours, stays very true to the book, although some things are removed or added. While the movie differs from the book in a few ways, it still gives its audience the same message.
Adventure, change, exploration. These are things that every human craves, from the average high school student stuck in class, to the average adult suck in a boring and demeaning job. People everywhere want adventure at different times, to shake up their lives. These traits of wanting adventure are shown both in the main characters of Thurber's “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and Allende’s “Uncle Marcos” and are expressed in many different ways that are found to both help and harm them in their lives.
