This paper will hopefully compare and contrast what I think are the two most powerful commercial big box retail companies in America, Walmart and Target. For both companies their planning, organizing, leading and controlling capabilities put them both in at a dominating advantage. Not only with their employees but also with their consumers and most importantly keep a significant upper hand on other commercial big box retail companies in America. Walmart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton an American businessman and entrepreneur, his first store Walmart store opened in 1962 in Arkansas; he has also launched Sam’s Club which opened its doors in 1980 in Oklahoma. Many factors influence Walmart's strategic, tactical, operational and contingency planning. In Walmart's strategic planning stage, they are highly regarded as visionaries and one thing that Walmart can pride themselves on is the fact that they develop their planning processes that enables the company to understand where they want to go, how they want to get there, and the goals they must focus on along the way to drive this plan. Walmart's drive to always make sure that they are first and foremost a value driven company is one thing that has never lost focus. Walmart continues to push the value button by leveraging the size of the company to force vendors for better costs of goods which enabled them to maintain its image as value driven. Part of Walmart's tactical planning was to figure out how to get customers to buy more products once they were in the store. This helps them to assist the staff in achieving the company's goals and also accomplishing their personal or career goals which can be powered by motivation, communication, department dynamics, and department leadership. At Walmart the leadership management contains a mixture of controls and standards with a certain degree of freedom for the employees to be able to test new managerial methods and continue to innovate for improvement of their managerial style. The management strategy is built within teams and the leaders go through the process of working with their team members. It appears that Mr. Walton had introduced some of these basic concepts of management which were popular with employees. Walmart offers stock options and store discounts to its employees to help solidify the importance of management leadership. Mr. Walton believed that teams will always do better than individuals hence; Walmart has always tried their best to make the employees happy and since happy employees can make happy customers and more sales Walmart will bring in.
