The process of preparing walls for wallpaper is a task that is important to complete. There are a variety of issues that may need to be addressed before any wallpaper can be applied. Most times the walls of a home may be irregular, bumpy or have damage that needs to be repaired. If any issues are not repaired or addressed, then result will be disappointing.

All items need to be removed from the walls. This includes any shelving, posters, photos, nails, or any old wallpaper. The wall should be a blank canvas for the new wallpaper. Make sure to remove all nails that were used for hanging pictures or any decorations. This can be done using the claw end of a basic hammer to a pair of pliers. Once the wallpaper is removed, then examine the wall to see if there is any damage to repair. Applying a joint compound is one option to repair holes in a wall. Another option is to use a filler material. Most home improvement stores have the tools and materials available for repairing a wall. The filler or joint compound will need to fully dry before proceeding to the next step of the process.

Sandpaper will need to be used to smooth the surface of the wall. If repairs have been performed, then bumps and irregularities may be common. Another thing to keep in mind is an existing wall may have old paint. Old paint needs to be sanded or new wallpaper will not properly adhere.
