I. As the homeless rates in Las Vegas continue to rise, we can all play a role in connecting with our community by helping the others. II. Volunteering our resume writing, technical skills, handy skills, and interview skills can aid the homeless with a basic understanding of the workforce. III. We can increase our mental health, make connections, and lower the risk for mortality by volunteering at homeless shelters IV. Lastly, shelters such as HELP of Southern Nevada, A New Start, and Westcare of Nevada are all accepting volunteer applicants for various positions (“Help of Southern Nevada”, 2012). That concludes my speech, thank you for your time.
Homelessness is a social issue that has been overlooked for too long. It can be observed in many states worldwide. The rising population of homeless people affects those characterized as homeless, their families subjected to the lifestyle, and the communities where homelessness exists. There are many solutions but only a few will be discussed. Improving existing shelters and building new shelters are general solutions. More in depth solutions within the shelters include programs that assist the homeless with opportunities for re-entry into the community. I would first like to discuss reasons why this issue should be looked into and conclude with recommendations.
One action I am taking towards this pathway of service is applying my academic knowledge. For instance, most of us forget to realize the privilege of sleeping. For most of these homeless women, their “bed” consists of cardboard and for some urine soaked cardboard. Unfortunately, these variables alter their sleeping patterns and quality because of their circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are the body’s internal clock that is responsible for a person’s sleeping patterns. When a person’s circadian rhythm is disrupted it can cause grogginess and an untimely melatonin release. Homeless people do not have the access to a private room to sleep in; instead, they are subject to sound and light pollution throughout the night. I believe when considering why homeless are not perusing a job, it is important to consider that some their lack of motivation is caused from poor sleeping. Eventually, I would like to study how to improve quality of sleep for those living on the street because it is a short-term
In the United States, it is practically impossible to walk down most streets without coming across a homeless person. The issue of homelessness has worsened because of the number of veterans back from our most recent wars. They have resorted to homelessness as their only refuge after being unable to maintain a stable home and/or not receiving the treatments they need. But as veteran homelessness demands more attention, especially in California, various solutions are being brought to action. The “housing-first strategy” being offered to homeless veterans and those endangered of becoming homeless, has played a major part in moving California closer to having an end to veteran homelessness in 2015.
Yet, according to the National Resource Center (NRC) on Homelessness and Mental Illness, 80% of the homeless population is off of the streets within 2 to 3 weeks. The NRC is the only national center specifically focused on the effective organization and delivery of services to the homeless and the mentally ill. It is important to note that the NRC reports 10% of people are homeless for 2 months and only 10% are chronically homeless. This fact shows that many people want to get back to ordinary lives and will work hard to do so, in spite of Awalt’s
Education is also a fundamental thing that people need to gain. It helps in many aspects. Financing Employment Programs for Homeless People reported that the first aspect, it helps in making the society more educated instead of making half of them educated. This will help the homeless people with the mental health by making use their effort on things that will benefit them in the future. According to Huffpost Impact in the subject of Library Offers Homeless People Mental Health Services, and Its Work, mentioned that they have done blood tests on some homeless people, and they found that some of them have higher blood pressure that could harm their lives (Libraries are often the safest place for homeless people, 2016). Also, Esguerra has met with a homeless person and found that this person was doing a full clinical assessment. Then she has shown the homeless person colleagues at the San Francisco homeless outreach team, and then they have provided case management and housing. According to the article, San Francisco has about 6,600 homeless people has started something trend. City Lab (2016) indicated that homeless visitors receive various types of support in different libraries. Esguerra added that the programs are “ Humanizing homelessness throughout the library, and the library becomes a sanctuary for many of the patrons and our program helps them to feel safe
With the rising number of homeless rising every night it is becoming harder for the shelters to house them since they do not have enough space or resources available to help. Since 2013 there has not been a new report done to count how many homeless people are living in Phoenix, but one thing that is known is that an “anticipated 250 families in Maricopa County are homeless every night”(Taylor ). There are currently 13 shelters that house the homeless each night in Phoenix, AZ, many of them not only provide housing but also “services such as alcohol and drug rehab treatment along with clinics’ (Phoenix Homeless Shelters & Services for the Needy.) Though the shelters do provide some help there is not enough of them to provide the assistance and housing needed to help the homeless. The number of shelters is not enough and more need to be built with proper staffing and resources to help keep the homeless people out of the unforgiving Phoenix heat and possible death. If
This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. The public and private sectors of this country are making a difference in the lives of the homeless by addressing the issues of housing, poverty and education.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] used the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ definition of mental illness as “health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior (or some combination thereof) associated with distress and/or impaired functioning” (2011). Our community is exposed to a large number of individuals with mental illness. Among those individuals are the widespread homeless populations. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development reported “twenty-five percent of the sheltered homeless report a severe mental illness (as cited in Allender, Rector and Warner 2014 p. 907).” This author found the target population to be predominantly Caucasian, Non-Hispanic, single males of thirty-one years of age and older. In reviewing the research, this author found that multiple health disparities happen in conjunction with mental health and homelessness. This includes cardiac and respiratory issues and HIV/AIDs. Without the proper healthcare services, the homeless mental health population remains vulnerable.
.... The homeless community is a growing problem that only worsens with time. If we don’t make an effort now, to help the most vulnerable among us, then we are only contributing to this problem. With our unsure economy, nothing is guaranteed, so just be considerate for others who are in an inferior situation, because who knows when you might need a hand.
1.... ... middle of paper ... ... There is a lot of work that indirectly helps, like filing, sorting clothes, and cutting vegetables, to be done at shelters and other service agencies. Think about what you do best and the kind of setting in which you work most effectively–with individuals or groups, with men, women, or children, and so on.
Homelessness in America is almost an epidemic. There are millions of people in the United States alone who suffer from homelessness, meaning they are without, a roof over their head at night, and without food. Many people just overlook it, and don’t realize how big of an issue this really is. Being homeless just doesn’t happen in a specific part of the United States, it happens everywhere across the country, even in the places you would never expect. It happens in the wealthiest of places, and the poorest of places, one place being Newark, Ohio, and the local communities surround it. With it being so close to where we live, there is so much we could be doing to help those who are suffering from it, but instead we drive right by them not even
Hudson and Vissing (2010) noted that individuals who are male, young, unemployed, never married, and living in extreme poverty are most vulnerable to prolonged experience of homelessness. These findings suggest the need for economic support, such as affordable housing and job training and placement services, assisted education, as well as for mental health services for people who may be at risk of becoming homeless.
Of the roles John plays daily, he stated that “Being a homeless man is the main role I wish I could do less often; I would prefer not playing this role at all”, (John, personal communication, October 12, 2015). The sentiment is shared by many of the homeless individuals I have encountered, but not all. John said that this has been one of the biggest challenges he has ever faced, but he is certain this is just a temporary situation. And, from what I can tell from the short time I have known John, this statement is completely
Homelessness is a big problem in the United States and we the citizens are not doing enough about it. You can’t go anywhere in a large city without seeing a box where a homeless person calls home, or just seeing a person in need holding up a sign. There are millions of people that are homeless in the world that won’t ever have the opportunity to speak to their loved ones again. You never really understand what someone is going through or how they got homeless. In this article it shows a group of people helping homeless people locate their long lost love ones http://www.npr.org/2016/10/16/498074856/harnessing-social-media-to-reconnect-homeless-people-with-their-families. People should really think to themselves what if this happened to my father or my brother, and never got to speak to them again. There are many contributions we can make to help that
