Having Costa Rica being apart of the Pacific Ring of Fire, there has been over 200 trackable volcanic development marks about 65 million years ago. But today, there are about 100 or ones that show volcanic activity, when five volcanoes are found to be active. Most of these volcanoes in Costa Rica are located in the northen part in the Central Highlands. Volcanoes are divided into three volcanic ranges: the Guanacaste Range with five volcanoes, the Central Volcanic Range with four volcanoes, and the Talamanca Range with one volcano. When I took my visit to Costa Rica I went to the Turrialba Volcano in the Central Volcanic Range. I saw many other volcanoes by driving by but I only had time to visit one. Mountainous terrain makes up 80% of the the Pacific Coastline. The Caribbean Coastline consists of long sandy beaches, dry humid weather, low tide variations, and sometimes swamps and …show more content…

Volcanism is a major part of the Galapagos and their formation. The island chain is positioned on the Nazca Plate, which is subducting beneath the South American Plate at a geologically rapid pace of 2.5 inches per year. In addition, this Nazca Plate is located directly on top of the Galapagos Hotspot. It is here that mantle plumes melt Earth’s crust, creating volcanoes as a product. The oldest island was first shaped by this ...
The physical science of the two countries is completely different. According to the main speaker, Costa Rica is much smaller than the United States. It could actually fit in the state of Oklahoma about two and a half times (Northwestern Oklahoma State University, 2010). The population is a little different too. Costa Rica’s population is around 4.5 million, compared to Oklahoma which has approximately 3.4 million.
The Quilotoa Volcano (3,900 meters), located in the province of Cotopaxi, Zumbahua Parish is part of the Ecological Reserve Iliniza. Its name comes from two Quechua words "Quiru" which means tooth and "toa" meaning queen because of the shape of the lagoon, as it has almost elliptical shape of about 3.15 kilometers in diameter and a difference of 440 meters between the level water and the upper edge. The crater rim ends in the southwest side door with Huyantic or Zhalaló summit is 4,010 meters.

This fortified country has made shifts to obtain a true democratic system. From sacrifices, crisis, and authoritative rule, there attempt to rebuild their nation resulted in long lasting stability. Latin countries since colonial times have grown accustomed to the life of strife, in which changes are only made temporarily. For one to actually set out plan that will last for the future is true progression. As mentioned earlier where there is progress there is stability and vice versa. Costa Rica has made the effort to initiate program that will build their country. Democracy has a great deal of influence on Costa Rica becoming a cohesive nation through the economic, social, and political factors. The sense of unity that the country has been born through the seed of democracy. The citizens share a community based image of what they are an apart of. Benedict Anderson coined the phrase “imagined communities, stemming from Rousseau ideology, which I feel this nation can identify with. (Engel, 2005, pg.537). Not only can this nation relate to this imagined community by struggle, but also victory. Many countries can only associated their unity with the struggle the country has faced. This shows that the nation is not making the proper moves to better the quality of life for their people. Costa Rica is far removed from the typical assertion of a “Central American” country, because they were focused on
The country’s two coastlines are referred to as the Caribbean and Pacific, rather than the north and south coasts. To the east is Colombia and to the west Costa Rica. Pacific. Stories about volcanoes are captivating. Myths come in different versions, but all of them are capable of capturing yours, and everybody’s imagination.
Volcanoes are one of the most destructive forces on Earth. It is estimated that some 500 million people live near active volcanoes (Lutgens and Tarbuck, 2013). Of the Earth's known volcanoes, 70 are expected to erupt each year with at least one large eruption each decade (Lutgens & Tarbuck, 2013). As populations continue to increase and more people are attracted to the beauty surrounding these areas, the immediate threat to humans from these sometimes sleeping giants grows. Due to this, the study of volcanoes and the service that volcanologists provide to the public by way of information and predictions on activity is immeasurable.
The Mauna Loa volcano is located in Hawaii and means "Long Mountain" in Hawaiian. It is a giant, basaltic shield volcano. It is one of the largest volcanoes and mountains in the world and has been called the "monarch of mountains". It has an estimated volume of 9,600 cubic miles and takes up half the land of Hawaii. It extends about 120 km starting from the southern tip of the island to the northern region. It is 97 km (60 miles) long, 48 km (30 miles) wide, and is 8,742 km (28,680 miles) high from the base on the sea floor to the top. The slopes are steeper than 12 degrees and about 4 degrees at the top of the volcano. Mauna Loa formed about half a million years ago and in the middle stages of forming into a shield volcano where lava flows to form a sloped and broad flat domed volcanic cone. Along with Mauna Kea, the Mauna Loa volcano is responsible for the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Mauna Loa has erupted thirty-three times since 1843 and is known as one of the most active volcanoes in the world today. The last eruption was 1984 and lava flowed within 4 miles of the city of Hilo. This shows that it is dangerous to live anywhere near Mauna Loa and that it poses as a threat to anyone living near it because it has a very high possibility of erupting within a very short span of time. Below is a picture of Mauna Loa taken from a bird's eye view.
