Clinical Description: Vitiligo is caused by the loss of cells (called melanocytes) that makes skin pigments. This result in milky white patches that is irregularly shaped, premature white or gray hair on the infected person’s scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard. Also, loss of color or white patches can be seen in the mucous membranes and retina of an infected individual. The affected exposed affected skin parts are prone to sunburn. Vitiligo occurs in three different patterns which are: foci (depigmentation on a few areas of the body), segmental (depigmentation on one side of the body) and generalized pattern (depigmentation on many parts of the body). 2) Application of make-up or dyes to cover up or camouflage the un-pigmented area of the skin.
3) Restoration of the normal skin: This is done by applying corticosteroid creams base on your physician approved usage, skin grafting (transplanting of the patient normal skin to the affected area) and by PUVA Photochemotheraphy (this treatment combines psoralens, a drug that makes the skin sensitive to light with UVA (PUVA), to re-pigment the white patches, this treatment is done twice weekly and can up to 10 years base on different individuals.)
4) By depigmentation: which is the bleaching of the skin to match the area that is already white.
Inheritance: Vitiligo can be inherited, but the pattern of inheritance is difficult to know since there are different factors that are responsible. Vitiligo is seen among closely related relatives, 1st degree relatives. So an individual who has a sister with vitiligo is at higher risk of having the disease than a nephew to the affected relative. So 3rd degree relatives (first cousins) are less likely compared to 2nd degree relatives ( aunty, uncles,) to have the disease and 2nd degree relatives are less likely to have the disease compared to 1st degree relatives ( father, brothers,
