Sarah (daughter): Then we were standing in front of what seemed like the whole community; the pastor was there, my first grade teacher, Mr. Thompson from the drug store, officer Miller from the school crossing, coach Benson from the high school, even Mrs. Williams who lives on Liberty Street with her three cats, and Police officer Jones, most of the older people were singing the song, I later learned the Black National Anthem, many of the younger people did not know it, so, we just stood in silence and listened to the words. Some sung the words from their program. After the song was over we all took our seats. Then, a lady who I never saw before stood up and sung a song. One of my favorite songs we sang at church. “We are soldiers in the army, we have to fight….we have to hold on the banner, hold it up until we die. My mother said she was a soldier. She had her hands on the gospel plow, but one day she got old, she couldn’t fight anymore. … We are soldiers in the army…..For some reason I thought about my grandmother and granddaddy. If anyone was soldiers for Christ’s gospel surely they were. They talked to me about the Lord all the time; I used to think that was all they knew. We are soldier for Christ our mission to enlist others to the kingdom of our commanding officer. Christ Jesus the captain of our salvation… yes, Lord, we are here today to formally assign these young ones to the battlefield. ….
