1971 Words4 Pages

Divergent by Veronica Roth Tris lives in a city where they are separated into factions. Now that Tris is entering adulthood she must choose a faction, which happens to be other than her home faction. In this book Tris learns what true bravery is, how to be selfless, to love, and to care for those around her. The big idea bravery is portrayed throughout the entire book. One complex lesson that the story proposes is that bravery is the ability to be confident in you and your decisions, as well as standing up for those you love, even if it may work against you. However, most importantly bravery is not just being brave for yourself, but helping those around you; being selfless. That is what bravery truly is. Firstly, in the beginning of …show more content…

For example, in the first scene Eric mocks Tris about how she is weak, he asks, “Got something to prove?” (page: 134). However, Tris does not back down, she is determined to prove him wrong. After rereading this important scene, I notice some new ideas that I had not seen before. At first I thought, that this scene was just about standing up for yourself; being brave. But now, I notice that Tris wanted to prove herself to Eric. This gives me an idea, maybe the author also wanted us to know that although we should stand up for ourselves, we should also be confident in who we are and not needing to prove ourselves to others After reviewing my notes, I realize that Eric is not a kind person, in fact this is the first piece of evidence that supports this. Maybe bravery is also having the courage to stand up to people who want to put you down. And, also to have the confidence to not let others influence your choices. Another example of this is shown on page 162, where it talks about how Tris stood up for Al, and took his place. After rereading this text I noticed some similarities of theme, as well as some differences. When Tris automatically stands up for Al, it shows great bravery. This is different from the other scenes in the beginning because Tris did not second guess herself this time. She knew right away that what the others were doing to Al was …show more content…

That is what bravery truly is. This is shown on pages 457 and 458, when Tris is talking to her father about what she had needed to learn throughout her experience in her faction. After rereading this scene it made me think about the entire book as a whole. For all of the book the main theme has been and still is, bravery. However, another idea I now have is selflessness. Even I thought, at first that selflessness was just like being brave. I’ve changed my mind because anyone can be brave, although most people are brave only for themselves, to get attention, or to get themselves through a tough time. However, I think it shows great character when you are selfless and not just in it for yourself. I’m beginning to think that it's not just bravery in it of itself, but it is also selflessness, which shows a person's inner motives. Another idea I have is perspective. For example at the beginning of page 458 Tris says that bravery also has to do with perspective. She says, “half of bravery is perspective.” This made me think, “what does bravery have to do with perspective?” After thinking for awhile I came to a conclusion, that bravery is about how you look at it; perspective. For example, you could look at a hard test like I’m going to fail, or you could be brave and face it head on, just like what I think Tris began to realize in the
