Fear is the emotional state that someone goes into when they feel threatened or endangered. The fact that we do not know everything makes us think that everything we do not know is feared. There are many stories that include the fear of the unknown. Each poem, story, and drama include some type of fear. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, “Hills Like White Elephants”, and “Poof” there is an extensive amount of fear for the unknown. Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ernest Hemingway, and Lynn Nottage all used the fear to their advantage while writing and making an entertainment for the readers. To begin with, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman consists of a depressed woman who is alone all the time and ends up thinking there is someone in the wallpaper. She is put into a room and is not allowed to leave. Her husband locked her in the room because her health was depleting. A couple, Jig and the American man, were sitting at the train station, drinking and trying to make an important decisions. Jig has fear of the unknown because they are deciding whether or not to get an ’operation’. The author goes around the fact, using minimalist work because Jig does not want the abortion. The American man wants Jig to have the abortion, but Jig is scared and knows it is wrong. This shows their fear while thinking about having the baby and how they think they will mess up their plans of travelling the world. Jig continuously asked the American Man if he will still love her no matter what decision she makes. Jig has the fear of losing him based on her decision of having the operation or not.
