Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Ellen Degeneres once said, “Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s about knowing and accepting who you are.” Teens have been so worried about how they look and act because of the ridiculous beauty standards the media has put out that they end up not loving who they are. This has lead to the rising of our youth having low self-esteem in the World.
Why are beauty standards so unrealistic yet so wanted? Heather Widdows, a Professor at the University of Birmingham, has been documenting on why beauty standards are becoming impractical. Heather states in her interview by The Irish Times, “As beauty norms get harder to attain, we all have less choice rather than more choice.” From that information it is easy to tell that it’s not that these standards are wanted but the fact that it’s not an option to not want them.
Photoshop is the main reason for these unrealistic standards the media has madel. Many celebrities, models and etc. are being photoshopped for magazines. And teens …show more content…

CBS News reporter, Joel Arak, reported on the study, “Body Image Issues And Teen Suicide.” On the first editorial by researcher Danice Eaton, at The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, surveyed 13,601 students from grades ninth(9th) to twelfth(12th). Out of the students 19% of the students thought about suicide, while 9% had attempted suicide because of their body weight. In the second editorial by Dr. Alain Joffe of John Hopkins University claimed that the media had widespread images of mostly ‘perfect’ bodies. Although these bodies were good examples for teens to look toward, teens that already had issues with their body focused more on media image. The conclusion of this information showed that teens who didn’t think their body was okay because of the media’s perception of perfect body were more likely to commit or attempt
