Unplanned pregnancy affects women, baby, families, and society. In the United States, 49% of pregnancies were not planned, 4 out of 5 pregnancies were not planned in women ages 19 and younger (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). A study done in 2011, revealed the fact that many of the unintended pregnancy were women with low income, and lack education (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). This unplanned pregnancy has countless negative consequences. One negative affect of an unplanned pregnancy is the lost opportunity for the women to start taking care of self in preparation of a pregnancy. Community programs such like plan parenthood can help with gynecological exam, education, and birth control. They serve millions of women in every state with affordable and free exams and contraceptive, and this can reduce the amount of unplanned pregnancy (Mckenzie & Pinger, 2014). Another community program that can help reduce unplanned pregnancy and abortions is public funded family clinics. Since there is a huge population that cannot afford health insurance this program can be an option for them, however the word needs to get out to the community has many are not aware the program provide this assistance (Mckenzie & Pinger, 2014). In regards to teen pregnancy, a mentoring program that targets at risk teenagers can be beneficial. Statistically, unplanned pregnancy is from teenagers who live in dysfunctional homes. These young women lack attention at home, lack self-esteem, have no parental guidance, feel unloved, and are uneducated. They can use a program that would give them an outlet, pregnancy should not be the option. Another program proven to be beneficial is the WIC program. The program is for those women who are already pregnant and made the decision to continue the pregnancy. It supplements the women and baby with healthy food choices. It’s extremely beneficial to newborns as they provide baby formula and although breastfeeding is the better option some moms may not be able to breastfeed leaving her no option but to give her infant formula milk which is very
