Underwater Welding and What It Takes. Underwater welding is a very intriguing topic to a teenage boy who has some talent in welding. The goal of this paper is to inform those interested in underwater welding. I will be going into some detail about what is needed to be an underwater welder. My goal is to answer the following question. What is the future of welding as a profession, particularly the effects of underwater welding? The main points I will be touching on are: what I already know, what I want to know, what information I gathered, my search, and my conclusion. A diver-welder must dive underwater to cut and join pieces of metal. However, cutting and joining metal is not the only task an underwater welder must complete. As Water Welders states, “Some duties of a diver-welder are: cleaning subsea sites, surveying chain anchor legs, inspecting and stabilizing underwater oil pipelines, wet welding oil rig pipelines, drilling support, installing well heads, saturation diving and inspection, and cruise/navy ship turbine repair.” (Water Welders 4). These are only a few jobs an underwater welder must perform. It is important to know that underwater welding in not the main part of the job. There is inland and offshore underwater welding. Inland welders stay near the shore and can usually go home every night, except few weeks a year where a welder must travel to other jobs sites temporarily. Some interesting things that an inland underwater welder may do according to Water Welders is, “Recovering sunken fishing boats and repairing dam walls.” (Water Welders 4). Offshore welders typically don’t work all year. Water Welders mentions that, “A normal offshore season runs from April-November and shuts down in the winter months due to harsh wave patterns and unpredictable weather.” (Water Welders 4). Offshore welders have a few choices for what they do in the winter. A BBC documentary points out that, “Welders can typically take these months off for vacation and spend time with their family or they can find winter employment elsewhere.”
