The dark, charming, fearless sailor of the sea. An average man with a wild imagination. Both different from the other in every way possible. Both Uncle Marcos from “Uncle Marcos” by Isabel Allende and Walter Mitty from “The secret life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber can learn a lot from each other. Throughout the course of both stories Walter and Marcos are described very thoroughly by the authors. They have very contrasting traits and could learn from one and other. “The appointed day dawned full of clouds, but so many people had turned out that Marcos did not want to disappoint them” (Allende 136-137). Even if you don’t watch it, you’ve heard some sort of buzz about the critically acclaimed television show Breaking Bad. The show consisted of five seasons, originally aired from 2008 to 2013 on the network AMC, and was created and produced by Vince Gilligan. It is widely regarded as one of the best TV shows of all time and has won many awards, most notably 10 Primetime Emmys. The plot of the show focuses on Walter White, a middle-aged high school chemistry teacher who is struggling to make ends meet to provide for his pregnant wife and teenage son with cerebral palsy. In the very first episode, he is diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and is only given a short amount of time left to live. Hearing about the grandiose amounts of money one can make in the methamphetamine business from his DEA agent brother-in-law Hank and already being a chemistry genius, Walt decides to start manufacturing his own meth to secure his family’s financial future. He teams up with a former student and drug dealer, Jesse Pinkman, and together, they make and sell the purest meth in New Mexico. Even after the numerous encounters that showed how dangerous and life threatening the drug trade is for not only him but his family as well, Walt continues to take pride in his work and wants to elevate his status to a drug kingpin. Nathaniel Hawthorne"s, The Scarlet Letter is a book about a woman, Hester, who moves to Boston from England during the Puritan times. She has a husband, and tells the colonists of Boston he will be arriving to be with her soon. After years go by and he doesn"t arrive, Hester finds another man whom she becomes close to. She becomes pregnant and the town finds out she has committed adultery. She is forced to wear a letter "A," meaning "adulteress," on her bosom for the rest of her life. The book focuses mainly on the sin that was committed because it effected the whole community. The scarlet letter had one basic meaning, "adultery," but to the characters of Hester and Dimmesdale it was a constant reminder of the sin; and to Pearl it was a symbol of curiosity.
Walter's change happen because he was in a crisis. Walter has lost almost all his money when he gave it to a person he trusted. From their Walter was willing to do anything to get some money back. This ends up backfiring when Mama gives Walter a choice. On page 1605 Ruth, Walter's wife, tells Travis, Walter's son, to go down stairs but Mama says no. Mama states: "No. Travis you stay right here. And you make him understand what you doing, Walter Lee. You teach him good. Like Willy Harris taught you. You show where our five generations done come to." Walter was set and stone on not to move in the house until Mama brings Travis into the conversation. Mama wants Walter to think if the choice he is making is the right choice. Walter and Malcom had a similar crisis and that was an identity crisis. With Malcom, when he went to prison, was still acting like the same low life criminal he was on the streets of Harlem until he meets Baines. For example Malcom was taking a shower Baines gave him a drink. Baines tries to talk to Malcom but he ignores him. Bains soon asks him the question "Who ate you?" The Godfather is most notably one of the most prolific films of its time. This "gangster" film displayed many transformations of permeating color to give the viewer observable cues in its mise en scene that drew one right into the movie. The dramatic acting set the tone of the film with a score that lifted the viewer right out of their seat in many scenes. The directing and cinematography made The Godfather ahead of its time. The nostalgic feel of family importance and the danger of revenge lets us into the life of the Mafia. Even though no other techniques would have given the viewer a feeling of inside the mob like the mise en scene of the power the godfather held, the characters are reinforced literally and figuratively because the story views the Mafia from the inside out, and the cinematography of the film gives it a dangerous and nostalgic feel.
The first reason I believe that Walter is the protagonist is because he isn’t a selfish man. What I mean by this is when he is talking about issues he tends to discuss family issues above his own personal things. Though at times in the play when he is drunk and loses his temper he does start speaking selfishly, I believe that his overall attitude in the play is for his family to move up the world. I believe that Walter’s son Travis is the main reason why he acts so unselfishly. He seems to want the best for this son and doesn’t want his son to feel that there isn’t anything he can’t have or do.
The movie, The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, starring Ben Stiller, conveys a daydreamer escaping his typical life by disappearing into a realm of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. In both the movie and the book, the title character retreats into fantasy as an escape from his mundane reality because in the real world, he is ordinary, insecure, and passive. In the short story, Walter simply retreats into his daydreams and tolerates his domineering wife, while in the movie he actively pursues finding himself. Walter Mitty, a timid, passive, henpecked husband, embarrassingly incompetent at ordinary tasks, constantly falls into daydreams in which he assumes such heroic roles as flying through a storm, shooting down German aircraft, and performing delicate surgery.
The Godfather is the “dark-side of the American dream story” (Turan, pp2). The film follows the practices of a fictional Italian mafia family, the Corleone’s. Though most Americans do not condone the practices of the Italian mafia, they cannot deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece. This film gave insight to a mysterious way of life that the average person does not have knowledge of. As the audience is educated about the mafia they also are introduced to many stereotypes.
works of literature have tremendous amounts of similarity especially in the characters. Each character is usually unique and symbolizes the quality of a person in the real world. But in both stories, each character was alike, they represented honor, loyalty, chivalry, strength and wisdom. Each character is faced with a difficult decision as well as a journey in which they have to determine how to save their own lives. Both these pieces of literatures are exquisite and extremely interesting in their own ways.
The characters in short stories, ‘Where are you going, Where have you been?’ by Joyce Carol Oates and ‘The man who was almost a man’ by Richard Wright, have lot of similarities between them even though the stories themselves take place in different setting in different time periods, but using symbolism, context clues, and our own experiences we as students of literature can better understand both characters and get an insight into their inner workings beyond what the text tells us on the surface.
Edna helps his mother in every way, he helped his mother sell her piano and when Walter found out that Sean took a picture of the piano his mother inspires him to finish the job and Sean wanted. Also, Odessa is very caring brings Walter his birthday cake in his office, she supports him Walter in every way. But, Sean appreciates Walter in many ways in finding the negative, he always kept Walter confidence level high, motivates him. Sean tells Walter “Sometimes I don’t. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don’t like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it”, reminds Walter to live in the moment as much as possible. Sean appreciates Walter not only to motivate him but also to keep him alive. Walter had people who appreciated him through out the movie.
The story is about Walter Mitty, a henpecked and daydreaming urban man, who often depends on daydreaming to escape real life. As the story begins, Walter Mitty is driving his wife to town for an appointment at a beauty shop. Triggered by the wild storm, he begins to imagine himself as the commander of a Navy hydroplane.
“And just like that, my life became interesting.”(pg. 1) Spy School, by Stuart Gibbs, was an amazing book. It talks about the theme of always believing in yourself, and never give up. It shares a really good message and I learned more about the life and hard work of secret agents.
