The gangster film is particularly popular in America. Its popularity might be because of the history and actual real life stories of the mob. However, what Hollywood does is take the underworld culture and turn it into the stereotypical story. One stereotype is all mafias having to be Italian. Some people get the impression that all Italians are in the mafia.
Movies such as I Cento Passi demonstrate unenthusiastic view by those whom are outside yet negatively affected by those members. Unlike American films, the gangsters are not as often viewed at the protagonist and are the main causes for the problematic events. But how different is Italian Mafia and American Mafia in cinema? The Godfather, which is one of the most famous American movies of all time, started out as a book written by Mario Puzo (published March 10th, 1969) and was later directed by Francis Ford Coppla in 1972 with the trilogies following in 1974 and again in 1990. The trilogies are seen as an epic tale of the Corleones, an Italian-American family, and their rise in and around organized crime.
"It's undeniable that the dominant pop-culture images of Italian-Americans have been the mobster and the related, anti-working class stereotype of the boorish gavone" (De Stefano 32). Textually, Tony Soprano is just this. He is an Italian-American, living in a suburban New Jersey town, the head of the local Mafia family. He is anything but working class, as he is continually portrayed as the mobster dealing with "business." He is involved in murders, blackmail, illegal gambling and racketeering.
?The Godfather?, isn?t necessarily about organized crime. Crime is merely the family business, and crime is the way in which the author of the novel in which this film is based on used to set up the interactions and conflicts between the members of the Corleone family. In fact, this film could probably work even without the Mafia themes. At heart it is just a movie about the structure of a family from generation to generation. The themes of the film are timeless, but the historical period in which the film takes place is also very significant.
The plot of the film is actually based on a single mafia family and certain people’s lives. The real Henry Hill actually said that the film was about 90% accurate and it makes the audience appreciate the film even more. To be able to paint reenact a real picture and only have to make minor changes to it is great, especially when those minor changes make the picture golden. The portrayal of the mafia life, complete to the traces back to Italy, such as the made men, are an interesting thing to watch when there is a humorous cast. For example, towards the end of the film, Henry has a lot of tasks to complete by the end of the day – drop off guns at Jimmy’s, pick up his brother, make dinner, and make a really important drug drop off.

Once he sees Corky is female his suspicions are destroyed. The mise-en-scene allows the audience insight into the characters and what kind of film it is. There are certain things typical of a mafia/gangster movie. Ceasar is well presented in a suit and welcomes Corky to 'the family'; his accent is also reminiscent of the characters in 'The Godfather'. We find out that Ceasar is used to having people who are ex-con's ... ... middle of paper ... ...e the most effective to analyse the genre and narrative as they both have an effect throughout the film.
Choosing Robert DeNiro for movies like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino was brilliant. Martin Scorsese really is responsible for changing my expectations when I view a film. When I watch a movie familiar to his genre of film, I use his films to compare, which I don’t believe is right, but his films are classics to me. To me, newer films will never compare to the work of Scorsese because society and culture are different, many ideas have already been done, and they just don’t make movies like they used to. I realize that movies he made will always be my favorites and I will never hesitate when someone asks, “Who is your favorite director?”

Most of the people arrested were either in one of the five families in New York or connected to them in some way. These are the people in America that are considered horrible criminals that should serve prison time for the crimes that they have committed. There are very few people in the United States that would voluntarily do business with the Italian mafia. This is because of the reputation of the Italian mafia committing illegal activities. This is not the case for those who are CEO’s of large companies or those who hold series 6 and series 7 licenses.
