Traveling Around the Fashion Trends of Women: 20th - 21st Century

The word fashion trends mean a change of clothing style. The first fashion capital of the world was Paris, France. The ‘Belle Epoque’ was the very first fashion trend. In the early 20th century, women had a conservative figure to concentrate on their body figure. A new style was born in the roaring 20’s, was brought the beginning of modern fashion. The roaring 20’s was known for the flapper skirts, gathered skirts, pleated skirts, higher hemlines, and low-cut necklines. The era of the Great Depression became known for its sophisticated Garbo look, where nylon stockings became trendy. World War II is the start of the pants revolution of women. “The 1950’s were known for a tailored look and immaculate grooming” (Kichura 1). During this decade, poodle skirts, bell buttons, printed fabrics and miniskirts became popular. Denim blue jeans, off-the-shoulder tops, and skirts that were categorized in: mini, midi, and maxi lengths became fashionable. This era, tight-fitted clothes, larger jeans, shorter and fitted tops became fashionable. “The last decade of the 20th century was also known for Goth styles and women wearing black” (Kichura 1).

The women in the 21st century returned to the convenient clothing. This decade, women prefer to dress casual clothes than formal attire, except for attending church, business functions, and special events. This generation, women do not really concentrate on any one style, but it offers variety of styles. Some of the fashion trends of women in the 20th century are adaptations of the 21st century. The 20th century fashion trends have inspired and influenced the clothing designs of women in the 21st century.

Some of the clothing styles of the 20th century continues to be influences and inspirations for the fashion trends of the 21st century. Reflecting to these facts and information, the fashion trends of women never really changed. The clothing styles of women today originated from the 20th century; however, some of the fashion trends of the 20th century was used to create another style. As they say, "Fashion recycles; and by recycling it, it creates something new" (Lehnert 116).
