Tom Sawyer’s Boyhood "It's the devils sure enough. Three of 'em! Lordy, Tom, we're goners! Can you pray?" Tom Sawyer loves to adventure. In the Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Tom the main character witnesses a murder with his best friend Huck. That changes the whole story and in the end the two boys find the murderer dead, his hidden treasure and become rich. Tom’s characterization traits prove that he has a true boyhood that others would admire. Tom sawyer is a clever boy, during his childhood . Tom is brushing a fence one day and a boy comes up to him asking if he could paint. Tom acts like he doesn’t want to give it up but eventually this happens ,“Tom gave up the brush with reluctance in his face but alacrity in his heart.” (Twain 13). Tom doesn’t want the boy to know that he doesn’t want to paint. If Tom does not convince the boy, he would not have gotten to go play with his friends. People admire that Tom is a clever enough boy to convince someone to do work for him. Tom and Huck just found out that Injun Joe was dead, furthermore Tom realizing where the money was, said “Huck it’s in the cave!, Huck’s eyes blazed, Say it again Tom. Tom cared for Becky Thatcher “Tom pretended to resist in earnest but letting his hand slip by degrees till these words were revealed I love you.”(Twain 45). He thought and felt that he actually loved her. He had a childhood “love” as most people think they do. Tom is also caring because he said I love you to Becky, “ He passed his arm around her waist and whispered the tale ever so softly.” (Twain 50). That is how the relationship started between them. When the two were lost in the cave Tom tried to keep from panic, “Tom did what he could to comfort her.” (Twain 89).
