‘The tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced, killing nearly six million people a year.’ (WHO- world health organization) Although more than 5 million of those deaths are due to direct use of tobacco, more than 600,000 are simply caused by non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Tobacco smoke affects nearly every organ in your body, it contains more than 7,000 chemicals, 250 which are known to be harmful and 69 of those chemicals can cause cancer. Smoking causes 90% of all lung cancers and can cause cancer in several other parts of the body, smoking also affects your heart and your blood circulation, which in turn increases your risk for several diseases such as; coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and cerebrovascular disease. Smoking can also damage your lungs (leading to several conditions), worsen the symptoms of respiratory conditions, and affect the fertility of men and women causing it to be more difficult for them to have babies. According to statistics there are 1.1 billion smokers in the world and this number is suspected to increase over the next two decades. It’s difficult to stop smoking, because tobacco contains nicotine which is highly addictive. While smoking, nicotine enters the lungs and is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream which then travels to the brain in a matter of seconds, it causes an addiction similar to that caused by the usage of drugs. Luckily there are several scientific solutions which have been invented to help smokers stop.

...an be awkward to quit smoking when your friend smokes because you may feel like they may see it as an implicit criticism of their habit. Smoking can put strain on friendships and kids or even adults can often be peer pressured into smoking.

In my personal opinion, i think that the most effective way to quit smoking would be to use the nicotine patches. I believe that this would be most effective because it is so simple to use. I also think that it is very beneficial that they are barely noticeable because some users are ashamed of their habits and this allows them to be discrete. I think it is very useful because you do not need to change the patch several times a day and there is an even supply of nicotine in your body through ought the day. In conclusion I think that the most effective scientific solution to quit smoking is the one which works best for the user.
