More Than What Meets the Eye In the coming of age novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee uses characterization from hidden identities to illustrate that the inner kindness in people can come out in the most simplest forms, or can come out when people are least expecting help. For instance, There are many rumors of people that generate misconceptions in Maycomb because of the fact that Maycomb is a “tired, old town” and anything and everything wrong a person does is spread like wildfire. Arthur “Boo” Radley gives the children many gifts that are rare during the 1930s, and even saves them. Mrs. Dubose also has an odd rumor that circulates, but many people do not know the cause of her behavior, and don’t even know her ability to be benign. …show more content…

They believe that he is a person who is the most malevolent human that Maycomb has seen, but they do not know that he helps them when they are in need or when their lives are endangered. Scout recalls what happened in the scuffle, in which Jem is harmed “‘Mr. Ewell was tryin’ to squeeze me to death, I reckon...then somebody yanked Mr. Ewell down...Somebody was staggerin’ around and pantin’ and coughing fit to die”’ (362). When asked to identify who Scout heard, she says that it was Boo Radley. After this incident, Scout realizes that there is more to Boo then what meets the eye. She originally thought that he was someone who would harm her, but believes that he was one of the most generous, kind, and sensitive people she has ever met. She feels remorseful that she judged him before actually even knowing his full story and why the rumors exist based on the fact that he never even comes out. The rumors are why she was surprised that he even helps her, because she never even met him, believed that he was one of the most malicious humans, but he still appears to save her and Jem when she was not expecting anyone to save her, bringing out Boo’s unknown kind side to the kids like another
