Pertaining to the added safety measures, the inquiries both decided to change the structural design of the ship. One way of doing this is to redesign the flawed bulkheads, which were a new sinking prevention tool in use in many ships during that time. The purpose of the bulkheads were to create watertight compartments which would, in case of collision, be able to continue to float, even with compartments filled with seawater. The Titanic was built to be “divided into watertight compartments that she would float, with any two compartments full of water; and the margin of safely made it fairly certain that she would still have floated, with even three of the four forward compartments full up” (Lightoller 287). These issues have been traditionally in the focus of discussions that caused controversies and ambiguous interpretations of various facts. They also often overshadowed other parts of the disaster story that were confirmed by statistical data and revealed the impact of social realities. The social stratification of passengers that reflected the social realities of the period and its class interests determined the chances of survival, with most of those perished in the Titanic disaster having been lower class individuals.
November 10th, 1975, a massive storm rolls over Lake Superior. As many ships make their way towards the safety of the coastline, one ship is left behind, in the dark turbulent night. Many theorize what conditions caused the ship to go down that night. Some theories deal with the weather conditions as well as focusing on equipment malfunctions that took place. An article about Ismay and the Titanic says, "The Titanic designer Thomas Andrews was pushing for 48 lifeboats enough to carry everyone on board. But Ismay said no to the 48 lifeboats and only put 20 on board." The article also says, “ Because of his choice it puts some obligation to stay aboard the ship and take whatever comes.” If there would of been 48 lifeboats then so much more lives could of been saved. But Ismay for whatever reason only put on 20. The 1500 other people that died on the Titanic could of survived if Ismay would have put 48
If there had been no compartments, the incoming water would have spread out, and the Titanic would have likely remained afloat for another six hours.

The Titanic, carrying twenty lifeboats, still didn't have enough for all 2,227 passengers.
Thomas Andrews was the designer of the Titanic and its sister ships. His original designs of the ships was to have a double hull ship, 46 lifeboats and have the watertight bulkheads go all the way up to B deck. While he was on the ship inspecting it, he had written down notes to improve the ship. His designs were either vetoed or removed in the ship building process. One reason on why his original design were vetoed or removed because of money. If Andrews’s designs were not vetoed or removed, the Titanic would probably have been able to withstand the crash with iceberg and there would not be a design error. Since they had not followed the original design the ship was not a double hull ship, only had 20 life boats that did not suffice the amount of people on the ship and all the watertight bulkheads did not go all the way up to B deck. When the Titanic had hit the iceberg, water immediately started to flood the ship and would slowly pass the water line that was made after the original design. Once the water passed those water lines and started to fill into the other compartments the ship only had a few hours left to stay afloat. The water filled into the other water compartments like falling dominos and would continue until the ship was filled with water and break into two pieces. The Titanic was a White Star Ocean Liner. The name Titanic means gigantic and she was the largest ocean liner of the time when she was launched. The Titanic had two sister ships, the Brittanic and the Olympic, that were similar being large and luxurious. The Titanic was built at Harland Wolff Shipyard by the White Star Line. Lord William Pirrie was a director of both Harland Wolff and White Star. His company was responsible for hiring workers and general construction. Thomas Andrews was a naval architect who created the architectural design and layout of the Titanic. Alexander Carlisle was the shipyard’s general manager. He provided the space at Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast, Ireland where the boat could be successfully built.
