In the spring of 2016, 19 million people went to a restaurant. All of them confronted with the question, how much to tip? Many people believe that tipping is a way to reward a server for exceptional service, or to reprimand them for atrocious. However, with the way servers get paid, it is clear that this is not the case. Tipping at restaurants should get banned as it promotes poor business practices, raises ethical problems, and perpetuates discrimination.

Jonny Pugh from the University of Oxford explains that many businesses have implemented a recent development in tipping technology. He goes on to explain that “instead of leaving a jar on the till, some coffee shops and sandwich shops have started asking customers to press a button on an iPad to indicate how much they would like to tip”(Source A). This seems to put unnecessary pressure on the customer to tip. These businesses are manipulating social norms in a way that makes customers question where and when to tip. Consequently, tips are a supplement to what employers pay them, instead of a reward for good service. Sanjay Sanghoee of The Huffington Post says, “most customers are unaware of this reality and don’t tip for this reason but for good service. That means the real problem here is in the disconnect between employers and the public about what tips are really for.”(Source C). The fact that customers are typically unaware of what their tip actually does, they may feel that it is used as a reward system for their server. Furthermore, not everybody tips the same anyway. If a customer tips of less than 15-20% what right do they possess to seize that server’s money? They have the same amount of right to do that as they do to refuse to pay the bill. Brian Palmer explains to his audience that tipping has become a moral obligation rather than what it is perceived to be: gratitude. The idea of tipping has always been normal to myself, as I was a kid and still now I see my parents leaving tips for the waiter/waitress when we go out to eat. It never occurred to me until I got older that it was hard for these workers to get by as their salary depended upon their tips. Once I read Saru Jayaraman’s article on “Why Tipping is Wrong” I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. However, it brought light and told how we should be getting rid of tips and giving the workers a fair and decent salary.
Millennials might become the generation that die before their parents, and it is because of health related issues. The U.S begun this unhealthy downwards spiral in the 70’s when kids started coming home to empty houses, and working people would come home very late and tired. People needed an alternative to cooking that was fast and cheap, which is where the processed food industry began and exploded. Now, most people would believe that the food industry is the most culpable. However, that person should have learned personal responsibility. This generation of 18 to 26 year olds could be the solution to this problem. Millennials are going to be the future parents and lawmakers who could improve the way health is viewed here in the United States. In order to fix this problem of obesity and obesity related diseases, millennials must take personal responsibility and make healthier choices, as well as pass on what they learn to future generations.
Tips are generally a small amount of money given to a person as gratitude for a service that has been provided. Fast food restaurant chains are a popular and convenient choice for eating on the go in our modern society. There are certainly several positive aspects to fast food establishments, but are the potential health detriments and collective negative effects on society worth it? Or would it be better to support locally owned and operated restaurants? Here I will examine several facts pertaining to these restaurants, as well as explain why I personally believe we should not frequent these establishments, but rather support local restaurants.

The average customers in a restaurant fall under the “Stick-to-the-fifteen-percent, tippers.” They have the attitude of “I’m just here for the food.” These average customers can be heard saying, “Looks good, I just need ketchup.” and “When you get a chance, may I please have a refill?” The “Stick-to-the-fifteen- percent tippers” have a more serious, laid-back face and stay quiet. These customers are average maintenance and average tippers. The only time they leave more than a fifteen- percent tip is when they need to round to the nearest dollar. Their server is mellow and polite because he is thankful for the expected tip. A server walks away from the table cool, calm and collected with no need to complain.

As a waitress, I worked there part-time. My basic salary was $10 a day plus tips. Tips were paid daily and basic salary was paid every half a month. I get about $40 for tips everyday for 12 hours working from 1:00pm to 1:00am and I have to stand all day except 15 minutes’ sitting down for dinner. I got less tips than others because I’m new here. Still, that’s not a satisfying salary.
In America, many are not aware of the inequalities that exist in the Food Service. The food service sector has at least 125,951 companies and approximately 12 million employees with almost 7 million foreigners. This sector includes individually owned restaurants, mid-priced chains, quick service (fast food), hotels, and beverage establishments. Food service plays a major role in institutional establishments like schools, hospitals, prisons and meals on wheels. They cater to the tastes of their particular customers and are often leaders of food innovation. In the food service, we find: bartenders, wait staff, hosts, busboys, chefs, cooks, managers, and dishwashers .The food service workers perform a variety of customer service, food preparation and cleaning tasks, all that which are very important to keep a business running. More concerning , some of the major working conditions that foodservice workers face with daily is no health benefits and significantly low wages. These employees working in the food industry make it possible for millions of people to enjoy food in restaurants but are not being treated or appreciated fairly.
When entering a restaurant, I usually expect to leave full, satisfied, and wanting to come back again. I believe that many people expect the same thing. The way people react to service can be very different from person to person. Depending on the way the customers are feeling, or the way that the server is feeling can be a big factor for the way service comes across. Service is an important part of everyone’s lives because majority of the jobs that people preform are service related. Poor service is an unfortunate part of life that everyone comes across. The way that I react to the poor service I receive is important and can change in the blink of an eye. Whether I react in an outspoken way, by getting loud and voicing my opinion. Or if I react in a quiet or apologetic way, it can affect my server, and the people around me, and myself.
