In today’s world, with the easy access to technology such as smart phones and tablets, young women are constantly subjected to images of what they should look like. Movies, magazines and commercials often portray beautiful women as being slim and slender. The “thin ideal” is often highlighted by the media. Flip through any magazines or catalogues, it is common to find picture perfect models plastered on the cover page. Moreover, many research have found that the body size of women in the media have shrink tremendously over the years (Bahadur, 2014). With the constant exposure of these “thin ideal”, could it lead to low self-esteem, eating disorders and other unhealthy behaviour? In today’s society, which is fixated on physical appearance, fatness is despised while thinness is worshipped. Although women today are very much aware of the unrealistic body figure, they still aim for it. Findings show that cover models are getting thinner than the average women over the years (Rehabs.com). The gap between actual body size and the bodies of idealized women are more noticeable than ever (…). This is referred to as the “thin-ideal media” (Farrar, 2014). The “thin- ideal media” includes media images that appear in fashion magazines, catalogues and movies with thin female models or celebrities (Farrar, 2014). Not only that, advertisers used photo editing softwares to alter images which can be found in all sort of media. In fact, a photographer said that he manipulated 107 commercials and 36 cover photos in one issue of Vogue magazine (Kretz, 2011). It has become a norm for the media industry to alter images of models and celebrities for their own benefit. These thin-ideal media makes women think that being thin is a good and desirable, even if it is to a point that is potentially risking a person’s health. From Twiggy to Kate Moss, the fashion industry has been attached to idealizing extreme slenderness, encouraging real women to hate their bodies and at extreme, develop anorexia or bulimia. If these models are exemplars of ideal beauty, then the measure for women is that to be beautiful, starvation level is required. It appears that the media and the fashion industry would have the public believe that ultra thinness symbolizes beauty when in reality, the standard represents infertility, and premature death. The film adaptations of literary works can sometimes be a nightmare. However, they can also turn out better than the original work in some rare instances. In the case of The Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the movie was a better format for telling the murder mystery because of the movie’s ability to show rather than tell the audience what is happening, the clearer explanation of the plot, and the more in-depth development of the characters.

The pattern is similar for the portrayal of women on television, magazines, and other parts of the media. The way media represents women are for them to be thin-like models and other women on television to be the high standard of “attractiveness” to others. The advertising involved targets young teenage women and feature these models that are portraying desirable items, and the “norm” is for these women to be slender and beautiful (Vonderen & Kinnally, 2012). Research has been done to prove that media’s pressure on being thin causes women to be depressive and negative feelings about themselves . However, it is evident that the media usually presents and sexualizes women who are “young, fit and beautiful” hence probably creating self esteem issues more than confidence especially in younger women who are religious towards the media’s expectations.
