They Key to Democracy

While a Communist society lives under fear, poverty, and ignorance, a Democratic society thrives on education, free enterprise, and equal participation. In Democracy and Education, educational reformer John Dewey argues that a Democratic society cannot flourish on just any kind of education. Rather than saving higher education for the privileged and propagating utilitarian mass education for the poor, a universal curriculum that presents real life situations and prepares students for their future role in society . Today’s American high schools fail to achieve Dewey’s vision due to systematic rote memorization and utilitarian education for the masses. Although these two factors may be seen as a practical way to prevent ignorance while still maintaining a functioning Democratic society, they are actually harming American society. In other words, the inaccuracy and lack of depth of high school education and culture is causing students to suffer in that they are unprepared for the real world or forget that there is a reality.
Evidence can be seen in Floyd Norris’s article, “U.S Students Fare Badly in International Survey of Math Skills”. ... society greatly. The Gateway to College program exemplified this; the program was able to achieve a higher graduating rate with students who were dropouts and drug addicts than the typical high school (source 4). There is no reason to save qualified teachers and interesting curriculum for private schools when it can be proved that with a little effort, every student’s potential can be seen, no matter what social class.
In 1916, Americans were becoming aware of how lucky they were to live under a Democracy. As the European countries fell one by one to Communism and Fascism, people like John Dewey saw that if America didn’t prepare its next generations for their role in society, the Democracy could crumble. Education prevents, fear, poverty, and ignorance, but if it’s treated as a systematic tool that merely keeps kids off of the streets, then it misses its purpose.
