In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Juliet decides three times that the best way to solve her problems is to take her own life. Her first contemplation of suicide is when Romeo is banished from the city-state of Verona; he was banished because he slayed Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. She ponders “I’ll to the Friar to know his remedy. If all else fail, myself have power to die.” (III, v, 241-242) She beseeches for help from the Friar so that she can return to Romeo and refuse Paris’ marriage proposal, but if the Friar can’t help, Juliet is prepared to kill herself.
