Revenge v. Pain In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Edgar Allen Poe conveys the message that the consciousness of a person is greater than any revenge, and guilt never leaves using, imagery, character, and conflict. Montresor seeks revenge on Fortunato but regrets it shortly after. At first he tries to let his pride come before guilt. However, he begins to be engulfed in grief and struggles to forgive himself for what he had done. Using the element of imagery, Poe draws the image of a catacomb in your head. A catacomb is a dark, damp underground cemetery in this case found beneath his house. At first you draw an image of an underground wine cellar but your image quickly changes. Montresor is a man who wants revenge and is willing to do anything to get it. He wants it so badly that he even “vowed revenge” (1108). He’s also a very proud man with an ego that no one hurts him. He’s proud that he got the revenge he wanted but did not want anyone to know. The reason he didn’t want anyone to know is due to the fact that he didn’t want to face the punishment. Throughout the entire story the character also used reversed psychology on his friend. One example of this is when he offers to go get someone else to taste the sherry instead (1109).
