The play, “The Merchant of Venice,” written by William Shakespeare is set in Venice, Italy 1596. An exciting event that was important in the text was at court when Shylock went to claim his bond. This event is exciting and important as it was very dramatic and solves the issue of the agreement between Shylock and Antonio. It is also very important as it relays the ideas of mercy or justice and prejudice.

The author makes this event exciting and important in the text by building up the suspense. The author builds up the suspense through the use of anaphora. The character, Shylock, shows this when he states, “I stand for judgement... I stand for the law.” This creates tension through the repetition of “I stand.” This is important as it builds up suspense by making the audience think that Antonio’s end is near as Shylock seems persistent to pursue justice and refuse requests of mercifulness.

The exciting and key event was the court scene in which Shylock requested his bond. This event is critical to the play as it illustrates the idea of justice or mercy, and prejudice. Even though the play was written a long time ago and there has been some changes to the Venetian law, it is still relevant today as the ideas this event portrays are very important. The ideas of mercy or justice and prejudice are important today because we are often too quick to judge people before we actually know and communicate with them.This is very common in today’s society as we are getting more judgemental because we are constantly on our device on social media which means the we spend less time in the real world making conversations with the person we have
