The story Veldt was about a family called the Hadley's. In this story it's just the parents, George and Lydia Hadley, and their kids, Peter and Wendy Hadley. Their house is basically run as a technologically driven house. They had a nursery in their house and they would here screams and yells, from upstairs and would go to go check it out, but there was nothing there. The nursery had basically run like if you were to imagine something, the thought or imagination in your head would come to life in that room. Because of this, they were all chosen to explore the supernatural happenings occurring at Hill House. The house was originally built by a man named Hugh Crain. It had been a place of mysterious events and also the deaths of those who lived there. Dr. Montague, a supernatural investigator, then carefully selected three people with paranormal backgrounds, and invited them to explore the occurrences at the house. Luke, the future heir of the house, Theodora, a careless artist, and Eleanor Vance are invited to the house. Eleanor Vance is the main character and narrator of the story. She lived alone, had few to no friends, and was looking for excitement going on a journey to Hill House. When the four arrived, they all were frightened by the looks of the house, but all seemed well until their third night there. Susie’s mother opened the door to let Molly, Susie’s babysitter, inside. Ten-month old Susie seemed happy to see Molly. Susie then observed her mother put her jacket on and Susie’s face turned from smiling to sad as she realized that her mother was going out. Molly had sat for Susie many times in the past month, and Susie had never reacted like this before. When Susie’s mother returned home, the sitter told her that Susie had cried until she knew that her mother had left and then they had a nice time playing with toys until she heard her mother’s key in the door. Then Susie began crying once again.
The two children, age five and three, were telling their parents, about seeing a monster with red eyes outside the window, and consequently, they were very afraid. The parents couldn't believe the story, and always told them, not to worry, that probably was just a bad dream.
For this paper I read the novel The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards, this novel is told in the span of 25 years, it is told by two characters David and Caroline, who have different lives but are connected through one past decision. The story starts in 1964, when a blizzard happens causing the main character, Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins. During the delivery, the son named Paul is fine but the daughter named Phoebe has something wrong with her. The doctor realizes that the daughter has Down syndrome, he is shocked and remembers his own childhood when his sister was always sick, her dying at an early age and how that affected his mother. He didn’t want that to happen to his wife, so David told the nurse to bring Phoebe to an institution, so that his wife wouldn’t suffer.
Have you ever had the thought that technology is becoming so advanced that someday we might not be able to think for ourselves? There is no questioning the fact that we live in a society that is raging for the newest technology trends. We live in a society that craves technology so much that whenever a new piece of technology comes out, people go crazy to get their hands on it. The stories that will be analyzed are The Time Machine by H.G Wells and The Veldt by Ray Bradbury. These stories offer great insight into technologies’ advancements over time that will ultimately lead to the downfall of human beings. The children were horribly spoiled and considered the nursery as their parents, not their actual parents. The nursery is a room that turns your thoughts into reality. The nursery had been an African veldt for about a month now, demonstrating ideas of death and hatred ever since the children were denied a rocket to New York. They called in a psychologist named David McClean. He said this wasn’t good at all and that they needed to shut the house down as soon as possible, as well as getting away from here. George and Lydia were fine with it since they wanted to do so already, they wanted to live and the house wasn’t letting them. They told the children and they were in hysterics. They begged the nursery to be turned back on. They did so, and eventually George and Lydia were locked inside by their children, and were killed by the lions that were always in the veldt, waiting. In the event, she decides to leave her husband to be with the child’s father. However, there is only one problem and that is that she has two other children by her husband. From the very beginning the room that is called a nursery brings to mind that of a prison cell or torture chamber. First we learn that outside the house there are locking gates, and the room itself contains barred windows and rings on the walls. The paper is stripped off all around the bed, as far as is reachable, almost as if someone had been tied to the bed with nothing else to do. A jail-like yellow is the color of the walls, which brings to mind a basement full of convicts rather than a vacation house. I think that this image of the nursery as a holding cell is first an analogy for the narrator's feelings of being imprisoned and hidden away by her husband. When she repeatedly asks John to take her away, he refuses with different excuses every time. In the graphic novel, "Stitches: A Memoir” written by David Small, the author shares his memories, presenting a hostile home environment and the unique characteristics of his family. David’s family was composed of his mother, Betty, a housewife, Ed, the father-doctor, and David’s older brother, Ted. Towards the end of the book the readers are introduced to David’s psychologist, characterized in the book by a rabbit. The memoir is a true statement of David’s life in a house where there was no effective communication, the lack of love from his mother and how it affect his childhood.
After George had turned off the house, the kids began to wish dark and gruesome insults if the house wasn’t turned back on. These insults pressured George to turn the house back on and the children praised him. After this, the kids ran into the nursery, which has changed to Hawaii, and stayed there all night. In the morning, George called Peter and Wendy to the kitchen for breakfast but there was no response. George called the kids again but no answer again. This began to worry George and he called out to Lydia. Once again there was no answer and George become even more worried. George ran into the nursery and found the three of them in Hawaii having breakfast. With this discovery, George was relieved and sat with his family for breakfast.
Technology is the ultimate tool to find almost anything that you are curious about. Technology can be used as a great tool for learning new things, but at the same time technology can be used in a negative manner. In the two stories “The Veldt” and “In Another Country” technology is used in the sense for making life much worse. The authors of the two short stories use technology to show that it is detrimental to society because it keeps society from being together.
The story begins as a tale told to an orphan recovered and claimed by Hibble, a man of mystery, dark and wise. The orphan, Flora, has been retrieved by Hibble and is on a journey to America to meet a fate she does not understand. Along the way, Hibble has been instructed to read to her the diary of her mother, Moll Flanders. It is an introduction to a woman who’s soul does not come across well on the written page, but Hibble struggles along, trying to entice the young girl with the memory of an extraordinary friend and confidante. Threats and lectures begin a journey that soon intrigues the young woman on its own merit. Her mother, it would seem, was more than she ever dreamed.

This setting is in a haunted house in Idaho. Paige experiences some supernatural existences. She heard noises coming from her brother Logan's room but she didn't mention it to her mom or Logan because she didn't think it was that big of a deal. Then she started telling her mom, but her mom thought she was sick of thinking about all of this. Her mom took her to see a therapist. Paige knew that something was going on in her house, she knew that there was something wrong going on in there. She was too afraid to say that and it backfired on her. If she would of spoke up, her family could have solved this problem before it got out of control.
“The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury deals with some of the same fundamental problems that we are now encountering in this modern day and age, such as the breakdown of family relationships due to technology. Ray Bradbury is an American writer who lived from 1920 to 2012 (Paradowski). Written in 1950, “The Veldt” is even more relevant to today than it was then. The fundamental issue, as Marcelene Cox said, “Parents are often so busy with the physical rearing of children that they miss the glory of parenthood, just as the grandeur of the trees is lost when raking leaves.” Technology creating dysfunctional families is an ever increasing problem. In the story, the Hadley family lives in a house that is entirely composed of machines. A major facet of the house is the nursery, where the childrens’ imagination becomes a land they can play in. When the parents become worried about their childrens’ violent imagination, as shown with their fascination with the African veldt, the children kill them to prevent them from turning it off. Ray Bradbury develops his theme that technology can break up families in his short story "The Veldt" through the use of foreshadowing, symbolism, and metaphor.
