America is known as the dynamic, diplomatic country that provides hope, love, peace, great opportunity plus opinions from all walks of the world. Through the eyes of each American, the value of our country differs. As I am a born and raised American, another country seems to resemble another world away. I value the ability to travel to several places being an American. I cherish my boyfriend who enjoys dual citizenship – he has a German mother and an American father and was born in Germany as a German citizen. I also realize the significance in the ways of hard work; I view America as a land of vast opportunity. I view “My America” as a melting pot of people with a mixture of culture, views, traditions, and a difference in the value of this country. Being born in one of the greatest nations in the world gives great privilege to curious minds that want to travel and continue the pursuit of discovery. Many immigrants from all over the world join us every day to work hard for a better life. Currently in our political campaigns for the presidency, one candidate strongly stands against allowing foreign people into this country, so much so, he wants to build a wall. People come here to work hard for a better life; it’s these hard working people I inspire to become. A portion of the people who (may not be blood to me) that I consider family moved here from Cuba leaving everything behind. These same people, now own homes in some of the most expensive and widely known cities in the state, work for hospitals as upper-level leadership and also managed to raise wonderful children who are now public service men and women. From the bones and backs of hard working immigrants, this country was built in order to have freedom of many things, as well as the ability to blossom into successful people that give our communities hope, safety and love to
America has always been looked at as “The New World” where people from all over come to fulfil their dreams. Their dreams may not have been exceptional, but only to have enough to survive, have a house where their children could be raised and feel free and protected. Now, according to Webster’s online dictionary Americanism is defined as a custom, trait, belief, etc., peculiar to the United States of America or its citizens, but to me it means so much more.
America. It was a dream come true in a New World that was envisioned by artists, politicians, and monarchs alike. The ones who believed that anything could be achieved by God, the mind, and manpower. Even through opposition from governments, kingdoms, nobles, and naysayers, these brave individuals strived to establish a better life for themselves and their families, aimed to retain a secure future in the process, and wanted to worship God in their own way.
In America, the existence of so many different cultures and religions can inadvertently cause one religion to impose its values upon another religion. In Grace Paley’s “The Loudest Voice”, however, the school system directly imposed Christianity onto Shirley Abramowitz and other non-Christian students in the school. Teachers in the school tried to enforce Christianity onto the non-Christian children whenever and whichever way possible. The major illustration of this attempt of “brainwashing” was the production of a Christmas play performed mostly by Jewish students. This was an obvious attempt by the school to try to force the other students to learn the value and history of the Christian religion.
Nationalism is extreme loyalty and devotion to one particular nation, and many Americans are nationalistic about their country. But even though they are loyal to America, defining what it means to be a true American is tricky. Being American is one complex thing, but the concept of being American can not be fully grasped. What it means to be American may in fact be one of the biggest mysteries of all time. Indeed, discovering what it means to be a true American could possibly take an entire lifetime. One thing, however about all true Americans is certain: we are all alike in that each one of us is different from the Americans in important ways. We are diverse in our backgrounds, races, and religions. Nevertheless, we are exactly identical in the we feel toward our country, even though we express our pride in a million different ways.
Some insist that in order to be a “true” American you have to behave a certain type of way ,speak in an a particular manner, practice a specific religion, or prescribe to certain beliefs. However, I believe that “being” American is all in the mentality and what drives a person to do whatever interests them. I believe Sides’ anthology truly demonstrates this. The people whose life he writes about all have different interests and passions, but they are propelled forward by similar motives that are uniquely American. President Obama recently declared, “What makes someone American isn’t just blood or birth but allegiance to our founding principles and faith in the idea that anyone- from anywhere- can write the next chapter of our story” ( Immigration Reform Quotes). In the United States of America, immigration has been a thorny issue due to the fact that some Americans do not want immigrants living in the United States illegally. Undocumented workers come to the United States for a better life for their children as well as a better life for themselves. They come here only because they want to provide their own families with better opportunities, something the may have not been able to have. Many people have asked the question, and many others have been asked, ‘What is the greatest country in the world?’ Or, if you live in America, ‘Why is America the greatest country in the world?’ Many people answer this by saying things such as freedom, education, diversity, etc., while others may say the people who live here, namely, Americans. Yet few are able to sufficiently answer the next question, ‘What makes a person an American?’ Many will say that living here makes you an American.
I found “The America I believe in by Colin Powell” to be an interesting and compelling excerpt. I personally like this excerpt because he tries to address the unfriendliness being shown towards immigrants by denying them a lot of common rights; above all I found myself lingering on Colin Powells’ side just for the fact that I’m an immigrant in the United States. I believe the basis of Powells’ excerpt stands on Americans foundational moral values. He intend to cause Americans to reflect and change their negative attitude towards immigrants and rather encourage them to live in the nation. Although Colin Powel provides an effectual argument through a formal and practical style to convince Americans who already support his idea, he fails to persuade Anti-immigrants idealist who are not on his side. This is because he fails to provide a realistic measure to solve the threat posed by illegal immigrants, he is being bias and he provides weak support for his argument that immigration should be encouraged.
What does it mean to be an American? To me, what it means to be American is to Pledge Allegiance to your country, to proudly boast that you live in a country that has a justification for existence, to be given opportunity. Although there are many definitions of what it means to be an American, does being an American really just mean being successful in society? The point of this essay is to describe the different meanings and my feelings of what it is to be “American”.
The United States is a country with a diverse existing population today; this country is known as a melting pot of different cultures, each one unique in its own respect. Culture; differentiate one societal group from another by identification beliefs, behaviors, language, traditions, Art, fashion styles, food, religion, politics, and economic systems. Through lifelong, ever changing processes of learning, creativity, and sharing culture shapes our patterns of behavior as well thinking. The Culture’s significance is so intense that it touches almost every aspect of who and what we are. Culture becomes the telescope through which we perceive and evaluate what is going on around us. Trying to define the perplexing term of culture with varying component of distinguishable characteristics is difficult to restrict. Presenly, culture is viewed as consisting primarily of the symbolic, untouched and conception aspects of human societies.
The United States of America was built on a foundation of immigration. Our country started from people seeking religious refuge from tyrannical England. From that point on America was seen as a place for people who wanted a better life. Throughout the years, more immigrants came and they weren’t just from England. People who felt prosecuted, unwanted, or were just sick of how their life was in their country came to America. For a while, we welcomed them with open arms. There was such an influx of people from all different cultures and backgrounds that America became known as the melting pot. Then slowly, as people forgot their heritage, America started refusing these immigrants. So what happened to America’s melting pot?
While America is richly diverse, their own culture has been established around the values of individualism, equality, competition, and advancement. Each of these values closely relate to one another, while encompassing many smaller ideals within. Although Americans believe each individual is a unique person, one cannot deny that these values have been heavily entrenched in America’s society. Throughout its history a multitude of America’s actions have been to protect these values whether they realized it or not. If one looks carefully, it is obvious that these four values have truly become an intangible centerpiece in American society.
As one of Earth's creatures it is imperative that we take care of our planet and do our best to protect and care for it. All over the world there are major pollution issues that we all can help fix and keep in check. We could reduce the amount of trash and items that we carelessly let float away with the wind when we could have just thrown it away. We could save the planet and in doing so save the world. You could be one of many that decides to help save the Earth from the chemicals and waste that is is forced to endure. Even though America is responsible for a lot of the pollution every country should take responsibility for their action towards the Earth.
The age old question that many ask today is “what is an American?” America is continued to be called the “melting pot” of the world.
