America Melting Pot Analysis

The United States of America was built on a foundation of immigration. Our country started from people seeking religious refuge from tyrannical England. From that point on America was seen as a place for people who wanted a better life. Throughout the years, more immigrants came and they weren’t just from England. People who felt prosecuted, unwanted, or were just sick of how their life was in their country came to America. For a while, we welcomed them with open arms. There was such an influx of people from all different cultures and backgrounds that America became known as the melting pot. The other half wanted to find their American Dream but instead they found a dream in Canada. This wasn’t because they wanted to. Back in the old country, they wanted the possibilities that came with moving to America but only had the money to send a couple at a time. By the time there was enough money to send the rest of the family over, America had met their quota on Italians. This caused a small panic in the family and made them think that they were going to be sent back to Italy. Canada came to the rescue by allowing people into their country freely. Situations involving immigration early in the twentieth century have been used in media as well. The Broadway musical “West Side Story” has a song dedicated to why they came to America. In it they compare Puerto Rico to America and how it’s a better life for them. Immigrants truly believed that life in America would solve all their problems. More times than not though they were met with prejudice and hate for being an immigrant which was also shown in the musical through the rival gang of the Jets who were stereotypical “clean-cut” white …show more content…

There is more talk about keeping and kicking people out then there is helping refugees or immigrants in general. Much of the talk revolves around the upcoming presidential election where the republican candidate for president, Donald Trump, wants to build a wall separating America from Mexico. He also wants to deport Muslim and Mexican American from the country. What’s happening now is that he wants to separate the fondue. It’s already melted and congealed into one mass, but he’s still trying to pick through it just for his favorite cheese since he didn’t like the mix. Being the melting pot of the world is what made America the great country that it is today. In today’s America though, that phrase has been pushed out of its vocabulary. The country went from letting everyone one in to almost kicking its own citizens out. People are even leaving the country on their own free will now because they hate the political and economic systems we have in place. Steadily increasing amounts of regulations have torn apart families and made it extremely difficult to become an American citizen. Overall, things need to change so America can be seen as the melting pot of the world
