The Use of Technology in New York Rescue Efforts on September Eleventh
On the eleventh of September, two planes flew into one of the most recognizable skylines in the world. Two high jacked planes were flown into the upper floors of One and Two-World Trade Center or more commonly known as the Twin Towers. At 9:50 that morning, Two World Trade came thundering down to the ground and shortly after that, One World Trade Center came crashing to the ground. With debris covering sixteen acres of lower Manhattan, and making it difficult for rescue workers to make it around the site, they turned to satellites, robotic cameras, and small lipstick cameras to look in voids where humans could not reach.
The Fire Department of New York City and the City of New York worked close with spaceimaging and I –cubed. Three-dimensional modeling was used in the search and rescue phase. This technology generated pictures that showed the area of ground zero in a three dimensional model. This let emergency planners get a better perspective of what ground conditions and difficulties they would face. [1] Three-dimensional modeling is currently used by the military to simulate war operations in areas where they may be deployed. They are now wondering if this type of technology would be great to be used for fire departments in a pre-fire model that would allow firefighters to simulate conditions prior to an emergency. In an interview with Congressman Curt Weldon, he stated “When new technology is made available to our military – our international responders, it must immediately be made available to our domestic first responders.”

Satellites helped to relay the signals from New York City to all over the world so people could witness this generation’s biggest historical event. Days after the collapse, satellites too pictures of lower Manhattan to show the debris field and what area of the east the possible contaminated air was going over. These technologies will be helping our troops who will be fighting in a foreign land to help preserve our rich history of freedom.
In this paper, I discussed some of the technologies that emergency rescue personnel used to search the debris of ground zero for possible trapped people and eventually people who perished in the collapse. Also I showed how many different agencies could assemble in a short time and assemble their resources to go do a job on such an enormous job.

One of the biggest controversies of the twentieth century is the eighteenth amendment. Mississippi was the first state to pass the bill of prohibition. From there on out the entire country followed in Mississippi’s lead in the crusade of prohibition. The eighteenth amendment was a law, which tried to reform and protect the American people against alcohol, as some called, “the devil’s advocate”. The outcome of prohibition was more negative than positive and reeked more havoc than good on the American society.

Introduction On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center buildings one and two were attacked. However, who we were attacked by and even if we were attacked is a hard decision to make. There have been many different claims about how everything on that fateful day happened. There are facts that we know are true, though; Flight 11 flew into the North Tower at eight forty- six in the morning.
Passed by Congress on December 18th, 1917 and ratified on January 16th, 1919, “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction there of beverage for purposes” was prohibited by Amendment XVIII of the United States Constitution. The ratification of this Amendment solidified a period in America’s history that would later be described as the “noble experiment” of prohibition and set historians, policy makers, and citizens alike on the great debate as to whether this experiment had created more harm than good. The standard view of national alcohol prohibition was that it was a failed social experiment. Support for this argument is generally backed by knowledge that by prohibiting alcoholic beverages in such a way created a black market for organized crime in the United States. In reality, the issue of prohibition was much more complex than the Amendment made it appear and encompassed many more issues than what standard accounts implied. Examining this expanded view of prohibition during the early 1900’s, this great “noble experiment” did, in fact, create more good than harm.

The time period of prohibition during the 1920’s became a violent one. Alcohol was illegal and people such as Lucky Luciano and Al Capone made it a profit. In order to do so, they had to grow up and rise in the ranks of organized crime to make their own empires. They involved themselves in multiple illegal activities such as gambling, extortion and prostitution. The prohibition amendment did not do what Congress and the government wanted to do. They thought that banning alcohol would raise the morals of men and women. They also thought that crime would decrease but they thought wrong. Not only did crime increase, but it increased more than what was before and ever expected creating some of the most violent and deadly times of the Great Depression.
Global poverty is often defined in absolute terms of low income nearly half of the world's population-more than 3 billion people- live on less than $2.50 a day, for example. In this article Mr. Gates elaborated on his inpatients with the shortcomings of capitalism, advocating for a revision of what most consider the free will of capitalism. Planning to call for a "creative capitalism" that uses market forces to address the poorer-countries needs that are being ignored. On September 11th, 2001 at the World Trade Center 2,749 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were crashed into the north and south towers. 412 of them were rescue workers who came to help. 147of them were passengers or crew members on the two flights. 102 Minutes by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn, the title referring to the time between when the first airplane hit the north tower and the south tower collapsed, tells the stories of what is happening inside the Twin Towers on September 11th and the fight for survival under unimaginable conditions.
It was apparent that Prohibition didn’t achieve its goals, instead, it added to the existing economic and social problems, as well as creating new problems that would be prominent in today’s society. Organized crime grew into an empire, disrespect for the law grew, the per capita consumption of alcohol increased dramatically, city officials fell to gangsters, and the government lost money. It is obvious that prohibition was a miserable failure from all points of view. Reasonable measures were not taken to enforce the laws, so they were practically ignored.
The Prohibition was started in the 1920s when the 18th Amendment was ratified. This leads to many disruptions in America. The 18th Amendment caused many people to become upset with the government. The 18th Amendment was the prohibition of alcohol but was this Prohibition really good for this country? This research paper will tell the positives and negatives of the Prohibition and the overall effect on the country. There are many arguments to both oppositions. This paper will be focusing more on the negative points of the argument. The Prohibition was put into effect on January 16 1920. There was very few people that supported The Prohibition. US leader and temperance movement groups supported it. Many People opposed the Prohibition including, the average citizen, teenagers, and the mafia.

Prohibition in the United States lasted about 14 years from 1920 to 1933. “Prohibition was the period in United States history in which the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors was outlawed.” . Intoxicating liquors were beginning to ruin the lives of some Americans and it became banned. “Prohibition, members of the Temperance movement urged, would stop husbands from spending all the family income on alcohol and prevent accidents in the workplace caused by workers who drank during lunch” . Alcohol was beginning to tear families apart and some wanted to finally outlaw all of the alcohol which would make life easier. In the beginning organizations pushed moderation, but after some decades the organizations’ focus’ turned into the idea of complete prohibition . Although the idea of total prohibition was far-fetched it eventually began. The 18th amendment brought about complete prohibition to all of the United States, with this amendment prohibition in the United States was finally established.
Overall, the Prohibition was an experimental and learning period of time for the United States of America. The government was convinced that it could possibly solve many of the societal problems in the U.S. This resulted in them passing the 18th Amendment and The Volstead Act, prohibiting the manufacture, sale, and distribution of liquor. Due to this, gangsters and mobsters ruled the Alcohol Industry. When citizens and government realized this Prohibition was not having the positive benefits they expected, the 21st Amendment was passed, repealing the prohibition and returning America’s favorite pass time to them.
Social media has become both popular and crucial in crisis and emergency communications. Responders are not only communicating to their public through social media outlets, the public is communicating with each other, and with responders. Individuals are able to provide important information on disaster impacts, including location and imagery, using nothing more than a smartphone equipped with a camera and GPS locator. One particular technology from Ushahidi offers an interesting way for responders and affected individuals to communicate with one another in the course of a disaster response. The Ushahidi BRCK offers an application of technology that, while not originally designed for use in the emergency management field, has an application in the response to a disaster. This and other technologies contribute to the ever changing way responders and individuals communicate.
