William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two lovers, coming from enemy houses. The story takes place in Verona, Italy, where two well-respected families are feuding. A small fight between the servants erupts into a big fight involving members of both houses, this leads to the death threat from Prince Escalus if fighting were to break out again. County Paris has eyes for Juliet and has asked her father for her hand in marriage. Lord Capulet then proceeds to tell Paris that Juliet is too young and will have to consent to the marriage herself. While at the party, Tybalt, the nephew of Lord Capulet becomes enraged with Romeo’s presence. Romeo then lays eyes on thirteen year old Juliet of house of Capulet. Romeo is so smitten by Juliet that he ditches Benvolio and Mercutio to return to her house to find her. Romeo and Juliet then swear their love for each other and make marriage plans. He then goes to visit his good friend, Friar Lawrence, to ask if he would do the honor of marrying young Romeo and Juliet. The Friar is hesitant but then agrees to marry them with the purpose of ending the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo then goes to meet up with Benvolio and Mercutio who question his whereabouts. Juliet sends her nurse to get word from Romeo, who says Juliet needs to tell her parents she is going to confession then meet him at Friar Lawrence’s cell where they will be married. Juliet sneaks out and they follow through on their marriage plans. After they get married Romeo goes to tell Benvolio and Mercutio. In the beginning, the Prince warned them that fighting again like this would result in the death penalty. Since Mercutio is the Prince’s cousin, and Tybalt killed Mercutio and Romeo was just doing what the law would have done. Prince Escalus decides that instead of killing Romeo, he should be banished from Verona. Juliet is devastated by this, her family thinks she is mourning the loss of her cousin Tybalt, but in reality she is actually crying over the banishment of Romeo from Verona. Lord Capulet believes that officially arranging the marriage between her and Paris will make her happy, but it does the opposite. Juliet refuses and Capulet threatens to kick her out of her house if she does not marry him. Juliet then visits the Friar telling him her plan of killing herself before she has to marry Paris. Friar Lawrence then gives Juliet a vial with a liquid that will make her appear dead for 42 hours. In those 42 hours the Friar planned to notify Romeo and tell him this plan, but before Romeo got the letter, Romeo’s man Balthasar notified Romeo of Juliet's death. Romeo does not want to live without Juliet so he takes a trip to a poor apothecary and buys poison. Romeo sneaks back into Verona and goes to the cemetery.
