“To Kill a Mocking Bird” is a novel which was written by Harper Lee. In my essay I will discuss how Harper Lee explores the theme of prejudice by looking at the writing techniques and how they affect people. To Kill a Mocking Bird is a novel that explores prejudice in a small American town in the Deep South. It is set during the depression. One of the main features that the novel explores is the theme of racial prejudice. In the novel Tom Robinson is being persecuted for the rape of a white woman, which he never committed. He is purely being prosecuted for being black but when Atticus who is a white lawyer is defending him in court he becomes somewhat outlawed in the white community. Atticus ignores the comments made by the white majority population and does not give in to the pressure of the community. Although, the racial discrimination mainly towards the blacks is the most prominent occurrence of injustice at Harper Lee’s time- the early Twentieth century, the whole novel includes several, other forms of prejudice that portray the unfavourable effects that was endured by innocent people. These blameless individuals were referred to mockingbirds, since it was a sin to kill one as said by Atticus, “Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” So, therefore mockingbirds are a representation of the main events that occurred during Harper Lee’s life such as having African Americans taking away their life due to the colour of their skin.

The book has opened my eyes to the way humans are quick to judge and condemn each other based on their social class and race. The book offers a trip back to the 1930s where I can visualize the prejudice against African-Americans in Alabama. Throughout the book many passages and quotes stood out. The seven quotes I chose hold a heartfelt message of racism African-Americans face. They also represent the theme and symbols portrayed throughout the novel. From the many themes that occur in the novel, the one that stood out to me is racism towards African Americans.
