Perhaps one of the most notable disasters in modern chemical advances and experiments was what was known as the Thalidomide tragedy, which occurred in both Germany and Great Britain in 1962. As a result of a sedative drug called Thalidomide, which had been prescribed on a wide scale basis to pregnant women, over 3,000 babies were born with deformities which was directly attributed to the use of the Thalidomide drug. It understandably caused outrage in the eyes of the general public and could be said to have turned the opinion of many people against advances in chemical medicines, opening up mistrust and fear with many wondering of the affects of other prescribed drugs.
