RuthAnne Shellabarger Comm. 320 Green Jan. 26, 2016 JFK Memorial and Symbolism When deciding on what paper to write this option of analyzing symbols in memorials really caught my attention I personally have always been intrigued by the history and life of John F. Kennedy so of course I chose to analyze the symbolism behind his memorial. I believe I get this passion of learning about JFK’s life directly from my father; he has always been interested in the story of John F. Kennedy and was in fact was born the day the beloved president was assassinated. The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial is a monument in honor of the late U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in the West End Historic District of downtown Dallas, Texas created in 1970 by Kennedy was a defining moment in United States history. And because it occurred in Dallas it really impacted the city. It has been said that within days of the assassination, even before JFK’s funeral and burial, there was discussion of the appropriate way to memorialize JFk in the city where he was killed. The John F. Kennedy Memorial was dedicated on June 24, 1970, in front of 300 people. Vice chair of the committee, Robert Cullum, spoke at the ceremony, in his speech he emphasized that this ceremony was in honor of John F. Kennedy’s life not in his death. Interestingly enough none of the Kennedy’s attended the dedication of the monument but later that year President Kennedy 's brother-in-law, Sargent Shriver, visited the memorial and opined that the best qualities of the president "have been exemplified in the Dallas memorial.” Our country faced a devastating change and the simplicity of the monument was the most ethical way to go about it. While many may disagree with me for whatever reasons my ethical perspective is situational meaning that my decisions or opinions vary given the situation. I have always made loved ones and love in general my top priority in life and I never had a word for my ethical stance until recently in the class. Johnson took into consideration what the family of the president wanted and what the citizens of the United States wanted and created a simple yet beautiful monument. I think that this is a good reflection on responsible use of persuasion because both parties; the viewers and the architect, were actively apart of the creation of the
