In today’s society, the media is filled with all sorts of outrageous things—Donald Trump and his mindless obscenities, Brangelina’s tragic divorce, and Kim Kardashian’s horrifying story of being robbed. However, there are far more important matters at hand, those of which can also be revealed through the media. By observing the media and The Myth of the Latin Woman by Judith Ortiz Cofer, one can see the stereotyping of Latinas, women, and male homosexuals among many others. This is important because it negatively impacts and singles out these groups of people as inferior, as well as influences viewers to believe that it is acceptable to be racist and derogatory. Specifically, the media likes to depict homosexual males as the “gay best friend”, ad female homosexuals as dykes. A perfect example of this can be found in the characters of Damian and Janis from the movie, Mean Girls. When the main character, Cady, moves back to the states, she makes friends with Damian and Janis. Damian has a higher pitched voice and talks like a high school diva. He tells Cady what to wear and how to attract her crush, and even lends her a pink shirt when she doesn’t have one. Janis, however, is quite the opposite. Janis’s wardrobe resembles that of an emo teenage boy, and she helps Cady plot her revenge against the antagonist of the movie. Janis also has a much lower voice and expresses a strong disliking for the preppy girls of the school because they make fun of Janis for her differences.
