Chapter 1 Who the 49ers are Contrary to the belief of many people, the San Francisco 49ers are based in Santa Clara, 48 Miles south of the namesake city. The San Francisco 49ers, created in 1946, are one of the most legendary franchises in the NFL. With 5 Super Bowl wins and some of the greatest players of all time such as Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Ronnie Lott, and Terrell Owens. The 49ers organization has made a vast impact on the history and decisions of the League. Fans The 49ers Nation proudly has one of the largest, international and most loyal fanbases in the NFL with approximately 4 million fans worldwide. Tony Morabito, Founder of the San Francisco 49ers, had seen the rise of sports across the Bay Area, which led him to plead his case to the NFL in 1942. The result, Tony Morabito was ushered out of the room with a firm politeness. The NFL had not whatsoever considered his proposal. Tony Morabito is still working on his dream of a football team in the Bay Area. In the spring of 1944, Morabito took another crack at an expansion team, Tony Morabito and some of his business colleagues traveled to Chicago to present his case to the league commissioner Elmer Layden. Once again, Tony was rejected. The league had reasoned there were no teams west of Chicago and they planned to keep it like that. Following this, Tony Morabito was put in touch with Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune who had been attempting to organize a rival league to the NFL. On June 6th, 1944, (yes D-Day), the All-America Conference held its first meeting, marking the beginning of the 49ers' dynasty. According the the text “Morabito owned the new All-America Football Conference franchise with his partners in the Lumber Terminals of San Francisco – Allen E. Sorrell and E.J. Turre – and his younger brother, Victor.” The AAF would not commence until after the War. On September 8, 1946, the 49ers played their 1st official game at Kezar Stadium where 35,000 fans attended. During their time in the AAF, the 49ers were fairly dominant, only being handed losses from a few teams. In December 1949, the All-America Conference merged with the National Football League, a groundbreaking move that led to 5x Super Bowl Champions. Soon after, in 1957, 49ers founder Tony Morabito died from a heart attack mid-game. The players learned about this travesty at halftime and came back from a 10-point deficit, shutting out the Chicago Bears in honor of Tony Morabito.
