Did you know that the first hockey team was formed in 1877 and that hockey was originated in Windsor, Nova Scotia? Would you like to play ice hockey? Well, a famous NFL (national hockey league) player by the name Shae Weber said, “I’m definitely hoping to stay, just like anyone would. That’s the ultimate goal, but I’m just taking things one step at a time.” Shea Weber is currently an alternate captain for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League, and he is an NHL All-Star and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. In hockey there are many rules. Here are some examples: Shooting the puck after the whistle, wearing “illegal” equipment, interfering with the goalkeeper, throwing your stick on the ice, hitting another player's stick, taking off your helmet, fighting, grabbing another player’s facemask and more. But of course there are things you shouldn’t do that are obvious like refusing to go on the ice, spearing, head-butts, picking up the puck, swing your stick around, use of alcohol or cigarettes on the bench, or use of electronic devices. Losing your temper on the ice is something to avoid because you could get a penalty for behavior. If you do end up in the penalty box, you will remain in there for two minutes. if the cross check had an intent to injure it could carry a five minute major and a game misconduct. Hockey is taken very seriously and when a player doesn’t follow instructions from their coach, the stands can get pretty angry. In conclusion, fighting does not happen as often as you see in movies. In fact, most people try to avoid fighting to not go in the penalty box. This is why most people think hockey is fun, it is very challenging and competitive. To understand this phenomenon we must go back to March 13, 1955. On this date, the Montreal Canadians were playing a game in Boston against the Bruins. One of the opposing players, Hal Laycoe, high-sticked Maurice Richard, injuring him to the point of requiring eight stitches on his scalp. Richard retaliated by smashing his own stick over Laycoe's head and shoulders and slashed him with another player's stick until it splintered. Becoming annoyed with the official's interference in the fight, Richard then turned and punched him. Since hitting an official was the least honorable thing to do, Richard was expelled from the game (2000).
Checking is a skill, especially used at the upper levels of hockey. Young players are taught to check the opponent against the boards, but the whole physics of the check changes when you put a pair of 200lb men into the equation. The Beginning: A freshman, Steve Jacobs, and a senior, Steve Spady, met for the first time, and they began to brainstorm in earnest to put the Lincoln Ice Hockey Association together. After meeting with Bob Devaney, the Athletic Director, they got the paperwork going within a year and they were off to the races. The Ice Hockey Association held tryouts, elected their officers, and everyone that made the Lincoln Ice Hockey team got one official red uniform.

Checking has been a part of hockey since the beginning. Recently, there has been much controversy over whether or not checking in hockey should be banned. In the year 2005 and 2006 there were many rules and regulations added to checking that were not penalized before. Checking has made the hockey game more interesting game and also has given the opportunity to players to play more with minimal stoppage. I believe that checking should not be banned because medical science has gotten the ability to heal all injuries that occur in sports, players know in advance that there is high risk in the activity, and it allows a fan to sublimate his aggressive tendency.

With increasingly negative views on the position of the United States in the Cold War, the Miracle on Ice and the gold medal win lifted the spirits of the nation and brought hockey into the American spotlight.

Before the 1980 Winter Olympics began, the US Olympic hockey team was not expected to do as well as they did. They had many powerhouse teams to beat and the team was just a bunch of college kids who wanted to play hockey. In the end, they had performed one of the greatest upsets in the history of hockey by defeating the USSR, the whom many thought of as the greatest hockey team in the world.
Would you rather have a couple of guys who have beef with each other dropping the gloves to settle their differences or a couple of guys trying to get the best cheap shot on their opponent? Fighting is a much less dangerous and bloody way to settle things. People still take cheap shots, hitting each other in the face with their hockey stick, but that type play would be seen way more often if fighting were taken out of the game. Emotional guys with short fuses would lead to more cheap shots. Fighting is a way for players to police each other. If somebody takes a shot at one of your teammates and it looks to be even the littlest bit of dirty, you’ll see that offending player on that team to get some revenge. Players can handle suspensions and fines but if they know that a player is going to knock their teeth out, then they might think twice about taking those cheap shots. Hockey will never become mainstream. It’s unique to a sport to allow this kind of fighting to happen. Sports don’t allow fighting. Without fighting in hockey would be a mainstream sport, it wouldn’t be hockey.
First, the rules that are enforced are a great way of making the game safe for the players. There are rules like, not being allowed to tackle certain ways. For example, if you tackle someone from the back by pulling them, then that is said to be an illegal tackle. It is also said that it is illegal for someone to pull on others facemask when tackling. There are many others rules that are enforced in the game. Another one is the rule that says, Head to Head is not allowed. What that basically is that you cannot tackle someone by contacting your helmet to the opposing player. Millions of people are registered throughout North America for participation in Canada’s national sport and pastime, ice hockey. Most young hockey players have the dream of making it to the National Hockey League (NHL). Because of this incentive to keep striving towards their ultimate goal in their hockey career, they idolize the players in the NHL. Therefore, youth players may obtain certain habits from the elite, whether those habits are good or bad. Some cases are of bad influences, such as young players obtaining the dirty playing habits of the professionals. The primary action that influences the youthful population is body checking. With the thought of losing a game, it is no wonder why players have the urge to play rough and potentially hurt the opposing team in order to be victorious. For that reason, hockey is a strong collision sport that requires great skill and motivation. Although body checking is believed to be a useful tool in the winning of hockey games, it can be the cause that leads to injury among players. Because of the rougher play, lasting brain injuries are becoming a worry and too many players are exposed to the lasting effects of the head injury. According to Michael Cusimano July 22, 2003 the article entitled “Body Checking and Concussions” states, “With the rising incidence of traumatic brain injury in hockey, too many players are exposed to the lasting effects of such injuries, some of which are not fully realized until the brain completes its maturation.” For this reason, new equipment and regulations need to be devised for use in the near future.

Hockey and its modern roots date back to the late nineteenth century. Interestingly, one of the considered fathers of hockey, Lord Stanley, came to Canada and showed great interest in the amazing sport. He then donated a steel mug of his to the sport which was to become The Stanley Cup. It is the oldest trophy in all of sports. Hockey is the sport of all sports and there is not a quality of another sport one will not find in hockey. If so, it would be a more boring version of something similar that hockey already has to offer. For example, in Golf there is the putt and in Hockey there is the slap shot.

When it comes to physical contact sports, there are two categories, collision sports and tackling sports. American football, ice hockey, lacrosse, boxing, and many more are considered collision sports. Tackling sports would consider rugby, Gaelic football, Australian rules football, and even soccer as some of the world’s tackling sports. A collision sport is way more dangerous than a tackling one.
