The Jump-Off Creek introduces the reader to the unforgiving Blue Mountains and the harsh pioneer lifestyle with the tale of Lydia Sanderson, a widow who moves west from Pennsylvania to take up residence in a rundown homestead. She and other characters battle nature, finances, and even each other on occasion in a fight for survival in the harsh Oregon wilderness. Although the story is vividly expressed through the use of precise detail and 1800s slang, it failed to give me a reason to care because the characters are depicted as emotionally inhibited.
Two people with two completely different characteristics have something alike. Both Dally and Johnny are mentally tough because of their parents. Johnny and Dally’s parents both do not care for them and could care less about them. For example, during Dally’s childhood he went to jail, been in a gang, and has been in many fights and his dad still would not care for him even if he won the lottery. Dally also talks about his dad's disgrace towards him in the car with Johnny and Ponyboy, “‘ Shoot, my dad don’t give a hang whether I’m in jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in a gutter...’”(88). Dally could easily live without his dad and he does for the most part. Dally just hangs around with his friends and stays at their place. Similarly, Johnny's parents use him like a rag doll to blow off steam, “his father always beating him up”(14). The gang knows what happenes in Johnny’s house. Once Ponyboy was witnessing, “Johnny take a whipping with a two-by-four from his old man”(33). Ponyboy talks about how loud and mean Johnny's mom is and,“you can...
Neither of the sons liked the villains, but they did not know at first that they had anything to do with their father’s death. It took an outside force to convince them that they must vow revenge for their father’s death. Both sons had the wit to approach revenge strategically. They wanted the villains to know that they knew how their fathers were murdered. The leading roles in each of the stories had a corresponding role in the other.

In conclusion, the black boy and Neil do not seem similar, but they are. A lot of the things in their lives overlap, as shown in the deeper readings of this book. The black boy and Neil can be looked at in the same way; they are both the same compared to those they are around. They also have similar backgrounds, living in the same city. By judging Neil and the black boy by their covers, they are different; but when looking closer, they are actually very
Father Travis informs Joe of the “Sins Crying Out to Heaven for Vengeance” and the different types of evil. He implies that moral evil is something that we can “do something about.” (Page 253) Mooshum further confirms to Joe that personal revenge is the correct path by inadvertently murmuring the story of Akii in his sleep. In the tale Nanapush’s mother is believed by her husband to be possessed by the “wiindigoo,” an evil spirit that transforms a human being into an animal and “see fellow humans as prey meat.” (Page 180) The only option when facing a windigoo was to “kill it right away.” Motivated by misdirected hurt and not malice, Joe receives confirmation from spiritual fables that build a foundation for his eventual revenge. He is free in the interim to explore the harsh ramifications of the sexualization of women and the power that men have over women by using their bodies against them. This is a lesson assumedly taught by what happened to Geraldine, but more clearly punctuated in Joe’s actions toward his aunt
